Found this today. It looked like a fossil bone to me but you guys are really good at this game so I'll wait for your opinions. Thanks! Andy

Have you tried the burn test?

If you hold a flame against it, if it burns/smells like burnt hair, it is recent.

If it doesn't smell/burn, it is fossil.

The tannins in the creeks can turn modern bones very dark in color fairly quickly.

I just tried that. It didn't seem to burn or smell like anything significant. Maybe it is a fossil.

+1 for deer humerus.Shapes and proportion match.

Could not tell you if it’s fossilised or not...:(

+1 deer humerus Almost certainly modern. Harry has informed us that deer have not changed much since the Pleistocene though, so there is a small chance that it is a fossil.

lots of Pleistocene fossils have been found in the Monmouth County brooks.

I'll have to adjust my perception of their rarity.

Don't do that Rockwood! They aren't common by any means.

My brother and I had an expression that we used when we were growing up.

"Quite a bit, but not too much."
