Gastropod- Clathospira?

Mesoceph

Recommended Posts

As with my other posts so far, I should preface this post by saying that the Paleozoic, marine ecosystems, and invertebrates are not generally my primary expertise, so I apologize if I am wildly off base or asking stupid questions.  Sadly, I did not find this specimen myself, and so I do not have any particularly useful information on age or location.  It was left in a desk drawer along with a collection of other invertebrate fossils, most (if not all) of which are Paleozoic in age.  Based on some web-surfing, I came up with a possible identification of Clathospira that is probably completely wrong.  Here are the pictures.  Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Hi,

This is a steinkern (like the even more conispiral form in your other post) which means that most if not all of the original shell has eroded away.  Without the shell, we don't know what ornamentation it had, making ID difficult - especially if we don't know the geologic age and location.   If we knew the age, and ideally the location, we could narrow it down to some likely "culprits".  Unfortunately, without this data, the best we can probably say is "gastropoda gen. et sp. indet." (Unidentifiable gastropod).

There is a bit of shell with cords on the base of your specimen.  Maybe someone will see enough there to make a guess on the specific ID.

It's a neat fossil.  I love gastropods!

Thank you for this as well as your other post!  I knew that it was a stretch without more information, but unidentified fossils make my heart ache so I couldn't resist asking for feedback once I found this forum the other night.
