Troodon
That's what I'm seeing an associated string of Vertebrae with spines. Is that a marine or terrestrial deposit?

Is that a marine or terrestrial deposit? It would be marine, the shale on the beaches of lake Champlain is loaded with fossils from when the lake was attached to the ocean, it is one of the oldest known coral reef locations in North America. The wonderful thing about paleontology is you can always learn something from your mistakes and be better off from it without any real consequences. That's unless you've published a paper and made a horrible mistake...lol. Then, well...I guess thats the caveats academia. 1 ...I'm back.

Jazfossilator
now I'm wondering if anybody has tips for removing the shale in the safest way, thanks for all of the replies and that was truly a great eye fossildude19!
Fossildude19
Pin vise would be the best bet, I would think. Might be really hard to uncover, though. Another thought would be to get a pair of tile nippers, and try to trim the trilobite from the rest of the plate, but that crack is a bit troubling. 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Jazfossilator
The other side seems to be all there just a small layer of shale covering it up, I am very hesitant to even try but man it would be great to see the rest

Miocene_Mason
I would never have guessed that to be a trilobite!
