Beautiful gift from my girlfriend

Lovely,  cool and thoughtful gift. Vintage illustrations really have a interesting look to them.

Those are "Chocolasaurs" or "Dinotales" models by Kaiyodo, a company in Japan.  I've lost track of how many series were made but these are highly-detailed snap-together models of not just dinosaurs but a wide variety of prehistoric animals.  They were originally available in triangular boxes about the size of a candy bar.  Each one contained a piece of chocolate with a separately-packaged kit of 3 pieces that were easy to snap together to complete the model.  Some animals stood or sat on their own; some had their own stand.  Each one also came with a little ID tag and mini-brochure that shows the whole set.

They came out in the early 2000's.  At Tucson, 2001 I think, one of the Japanese visitors, a well-known regular and friend every year, brought several cases (each one held 28 boxes).  Black Hills was selling them and they were doing well.  I was helping a friend at his booth that week after the first weekend when foot traffic lets up.  He went to go make a deal at another show and I was watching the booth.  It was back when when the Ramada (now called the Vagabond) had a show and Black Hills had a booth in the same ballroom there.  With few customers around I was talking to a nearby dealer and we drifted over to Black Hills and bought a few boxes.  The thing with the boxes is that you don't know which animal you're going to get.  Every hour or two that day, the other dealer and I would go back and buy a few more to break up the day.  I ended up with a number of the Series 1 models but might still be a few short of the set.

Since then, I picked some of Series 2 and maybe a few of Series 3.  There have been rare color variations and several exclusives sold at certain stores in Japan so toy collectors and dinosaur memorabilia collectors have gone nuts trying to obtain one of everything.  Kaiyodo has made several lines of models including larger versions and a set of modern ocean animals with exclusives sold at aquariums.  I have a few of the deepwater animal models too - gifts from my friend.

I should take some photos of the ones I have and maybe there are some other Chocolasaur collectors in our midst who can share some photos.  I found some at a local flea market a few years ago.  Unfortunately, the guy glued them together (you're not supposed to glue them) and then glued them to a plastic stand.  Some of them came off with some careful scalpel work but some were just too tight together.  Acetone could be used but it would also dissolve the paint.  Anyway, these models could take up a long thread of their own.

I find it ironic that cell phones started out as big bulky "bricks" then kept getting smaller and smaller.  Not we're going back the other direction and making them so you can't keep them in a pocket or purse anymore. :eyeroll:

I like that they're in separate pieces so you can scatter the parts about.

Reassembly might be a tad hard though. :)
