Hello!

I found this on the beach in Bay Head, NJ. Is this some kind of tooth? Any ideas what kind? I have additional photos if that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TFF!

Not a tooth. Looks like a bone fragment.

Pictures of the back and sides may help with an ID. Please include a scale.

Thanks for the response! Here are a couple more angles, and a shot with a scale:

Some sort of turtle carapace piece?

I'm not familiar with the spikes on this though.

Thanks for the additional pictures.

The 2 sikes make ame think it is part of a fish.

Wait for others to reply.

Now that you mention it, it does have more of a fishy texture.

I’m thinking horseshoe crab bit.

It looks modern; I think it's part of a fish. It doesn't really remind me of a horseshoe crab.

The bone has a fish-like texture. The two teeth are odd. I haven’t seen anything like it.

Hi,

Both points look like teeth, but the rest reminds me a part of fish skull. I can't say if it is current or fossilized.

Perhaps they are not oral teeth, but denticles. This is an odd piece for sure.

The two spikes do not look like teeth to Me. I think that it is skull piece from a "bullhead" fish.

I agree with Eric that the texture is fish-like.  I believe that the specimen also looks modern.  Modern fish bone can turn black in a very short period of time but should have a smell to it.  I haven't seen anything like it before either.

The only issue with that ID being that on sculpins, the Spikes are oriented towards the posterior of the fish.

In this item, the spikes are perpendicular to the bone.

OK, maybe something like this...

I still think it is a fish skull piece, just not sure what fish.

In the first pic the one on the right appears to arch backwards. Maybe the tips are broken off, giving them the appearance of not angling as sharply.

That was also what I thought, a lionfish.

It looks very alike to lionfish, but I feel like it is too broad to be from it.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and all the input!

The texture does resemble that of fish bone fragments I've found. The spines are what threw me off...they look like teeth, but it definitely doesn't seem like a jawbone.

It does have a very faint fishy smell to it.

Thanks for those photos! Something like this seems a very likely answer. It's definitely unlike any piece I've found while beachcombing before.
