Brett Breakin' Rocks
The formation where some of the nicer teeth originate from. I say formation but this is the dredge-float that contains nice sized quartz etc .. cobbles. Did I mention it was beautiful .. so many swifts .. insects .. deer. Spring is here.

They usually get blasted by the sun and elements but I found a phone sized piece intact. Schreger lines ... the crosshatch pattern. Most likely a mammoth or mastodon. I've found tooth bits from both in the past. These ivory pieces look like black phosphatic rock. I almost tossed it. (I probably would have had it not been for that beautiful cross-section)

Brett Breakin' Rocks
Now that school is out and grades are in, I've made it out twice in the past week. Man, it has been wicked hot with 'something' of a breeze on the water. Here are the finds from Friday and Monday. Friday was fun when a storm blew up real quick. My hike is 6 miles give or take round trip so by the time I got back to the Kayak it was time to hunker down. No way was I gonna paddle faster than a thunderstorm. It was a bit blustery and the rain was horizontal but most of the electrical storm passed to the North of me ... *phew* Next time maybe I won't push the hike when the clouds are rising up so quickly. A few from Friday The broken meg is just shy of 6 inches ... And for Monday ... The Great Whites were out in force. The mammal tooth I'm not so sure on yet .. it has been worn down quite a bit.

Brett Breakin' Rocks
Some of my recent finds ... a whale bulla and tooth and another periotic of a baleen whale. Balaenoptera borealina. I think I found 2 from the baleen whale .. and the second one is just heavily worn and broken open. My first delphinid/dolphin periotic as well. Best find of the day hands down. More scans to come later .. there is always more.
Brett Breakin' Rocks
Friday was a gorgeous day .. though the promised showers didn't materialize. I was hoping to receive a little respite from the heat, but at least there was a stiff onshore wind that kept the mosquitoes at bay ... Paddling out wasn't too bad since I was paddling with the tide, but on Friday the butt of the boat felt like it was reaaaaly dragging. When I hauled the boat out it weighed a ton. Didn't take long to realize that I had sprung a decent sized leak at some point in the last week and it had just split open wide. The keel had a long 4 inch crack. No good .... time for one of those fiberglass patches. I asked a family boating on the water for duct tape .. nobody has duct tape ? .. I apparently need to start packing it, I'm learning day by day what is needed in this isolated location. I MacGyver'd using some of the wicked sticky clay that has a tendency to gum up my booties but I'm not sure if it helped much. I had to drain the boat on both sides of the river. The fossil hunting was good. The tides and wind were heavy and not as much rain lately so the sand was mostly clean. Not as much sediment. I found my second delphinid -dolphin- periotic in a week. Previously I had found none in these past two years. To top it off I found a little gem of a EDIT: Gator tooth. Thanks for the ID @Al Dente Another uncommon find for this area, especially with root mostly intact and some great color. The makos were all about, but the best find of the day was the little blonde bull shark Carcharhinus sp. Absolutely perfect .. and bleached almost white by the sun. I stopped by Brunswick, GA to poke around and walked away what was described by Bobby Boessenecker as possibly a Kogia a dwarf sperm whale bulla. I initially was convinced it was a dolphin tympanic bulla.

Brett Breakin' Rocks
Well, the weather was nice when I went out last week. Unfortunately, my normal drop in point is under construction and , having found the bid contract, it looks like it is slated for over 200 days ! .. Gah ! These guys are gonna kill my good karma. I tried in vain to find an alternate put in spot, so I had to find another public launch. Where I normally drop into the water the paddle , with the tides if I time it correctly, is just under two miles. Today I was saved by the foggy conditions but the paddle turned out to be just under 10 miles total. These are ocean tides so thank my lucky stars I had planned ahead that day. I was sore everywhere and the blisters were aplenty. (PS. Did I mention that I think my tolerance has been reached and I just purchased a trolling motor ?? hahaha .... Yeah, that happened) The finds were limited to a smaller location because i was on a rising tide, my hunting schedule was reversed because of the drop in point. Still, I pulled a nice sperm whale periotic out of the matrix and my trip maker was this crazy tiger shark tooth from an unusual position. I'm assuming near the centerline on the lower jaw. The turtle shell was nice and I found a whale (?) tooth with interesting color and a chunk or cusp of a mastodon tooth. Horse teeth and fish verts in various conditions rounded out the top. How do I always go home with Tilly bones ?! They are like Tribbles I tell you ....
Brett Breakin' Rocks
Woah .. what a killer quarter .. I think I might have gotten out twice in 11 weeks ? The last 3 weeks have been more kind and I have been out in my new kayak a-la-trolling-motor setup twice. So the hunting frquency is back to a respectable once a week. Unfortunately that won't last long ... *sigh* Here is a data dump of the finds. Some in situ pics of the usual suspects. A broken meg hiding up on the hill .... Possibly a Diorocetus sp. or Herpetocetus sp. extinct baleen whale ear bulla. My latest trip this Friday !!! (Woo Hoo I made it out again) .. much better weather. Not sure going out on Wednesday with sustained 15-20kt winds and 2-3ft seas would not have been as pleasant. The need was strong but common sense won the day. That doesn't always happen .. haha. Possibly a beaver or other rodent tooth. Not 100% sure. Cheers, Brett
