Rock formation?

I found this one in Kansas. I have no clue if it's just a odd rock formation or what. Thought I would share

Neat looking rock, but I see no fossil.

However, in the second and the last pictures it looks like a carved bear. (it is not, just looks like it.)

It's easy to imagine that could be a trace fossil.

Proving it is a whole different story though. :)

It does look a little like a foot cast to me but like you said how can it be proven and I not sure either maybe not . Here in the UK there is some famous  spots where you can find foot casts that are free from the matrix. So that helps with an ID but I don’t know about Kansas, I think it  maybe worthwhile doing a little research. :)

Sorry, but I'm not seeing a footprint cast here.

Just oddly shaped limestone. :(

Keep Looking, though.

This is obviously a tortoise effigy created by a previously unknown peoples of the Kansas region who worshiped tortoise as gods.

It was actually the "Smokey Hill Chalk Peoples", but you're British so we'll let it go. ;)

No I'm not sure. I'm just now starting to research fossils. I come here to ask for help identifying. Is there a way to tell if its rock or fossil?

Most "fossils" are rock.

With a piece as weathered as this is and only seeing pictures it is hard to be sure that it is or is not a fossil.

Sometimes You need someone that knows the finds in the formation to be able to say one way or the other.

Sorry, I meant that as a question to the other members who have responded to your thread. I might have a fragment of a baculite (type of ammonite) that I can photograph so you can see what I'm talking about. For now, I'm off to bed.

Here is a piece of a baculite (straight shelled ammonite) at a suture line.

EDIT: Sorry for the poor quality photos, I just snapped it quick this morning with my phone. I didn't realize how blurry it was until it showed up on my screen. Hopefully you can still get the idea. :)
