Concretion or fossil?

Thank you for your reply, @ynot. If it was a sponge, which type would it be? (I didn’t realize sponges could look similar to this.) How could it be both a chert nodule and a sponge?

I do not know sponges enough to say one way or the other. (But it does look like some I have seen here on TFF.) Maybe @Spongy Joe can help.

Many concretions will form around a nucleus of organic material. (Mason creek siderite nodules are a classic example.)

Some sponges have a silicate "skeleton" (glass sponges) that can act as a nucleus for the formation of a chert nodule.

Hmm. Thanks, @ynot. I’ve always thought sponges had to have a “spongey” appearance. I’m now wondering if this next picture is a sponge or not?
