Hi all

i am looking for a short fossil hunting trip to do in next two weeks of August. Willing to drive from Savannah ga or even fly if I can find a site fairly close to an airport. (Within a few hours). Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can go perhaps Florida Georgia or even out west that has reasonably priced fossil hunts in which I can bring fossils home that I find?thanks

I can put you on some Ordovician and Mississippian near Louisville, KY

Cathy & crew are awesome and have a wide variety of fossil hunting trips most weekends in NC, VA & MD. They also do planned trips in FL, AL and Nebraska.

Here so info for sites out west if you end up going-

In southwest Wyoming, there are several private quarries where people can find and keep fossilized fish from the Eocene epoch. Each have differing rules about what you can keep if you find something rare, here are some links.

Warfield Fossil Quarry/Fossil Safari

In Colorado, an hour south of Denver is the Florissant Fossil Quarry where you can find well preserved leaves and insects in a younger Eocene horizon.

Although their season is already over, PaleoProspectors is the best in the business when it comes to finding dinosaurs out west and highly recommend looking into their services for next summer if you are planning a family trip in the area (may not be suitable for young kids however, I would say ages 8 and up, I would defer to Steve, the director for guidance on that).

I hope this is of assistance.

If you want to come to Dallas I can take you ammonite hunting. There are numerous sites within an hour of DFW airport. Numerous species from under 1 cm on up to 12 inches plus. Heteromorphs, baculites and ammonites.

Don’t expect European Jurassic type or those found in the Rockies. These are Texas Cretaceous ammonites.

I don’t charge to take people out hunting. I just enjoy hunting and sharing the joy of fossil hunting with others.

If I were going on a fossil hunting vacation I’d be hitting Wyoming and Montana.

If you are not in Florida.  I go out a few times a week.  Not really looking to take locals. Slim pickins this time of year.

Hey! I'm fairly new here. I live in central GA and I've been wanting to do the same type of trip.

I've done a bit of research over the months and these look like good tours:

Charleston area:

Charleston Fossil Adventures (Highly recommended from what I hear. Mostly beach hunting.)
https://www.chsfossiladventures.com

Low Country Fossil Excursions (Mixed reviews but newer reviews are better than some from years ago.)

http://www.lowcountryfossilexcursions.com

Savannah Area:

There's Sundial that takes you up the Savannah River but they're pricey ($425).

Bull River Marina in Savannah will do the same type of deal but it's way cheaper. $175 for 6 people but I'm about 2.5 hours away...maybe one day.

Gainesville, FL:

Fossil Voyages look like they give a good tour with a nice amount of fossils to be found:

If you hear of any tours in GA please let me know! I'm dying to find some shark teeth.

It is funny to read "cm" and "inches" in the same phrase !

I can vouch for Charleston Fossil Adventures.  The owner and operator Ashby is great and seriously interested in making sure you find fossils and know what you find.

I did the 3/4 day Kayak trip with him a couple weeks back.   It was about an hour of paddling to the dredge island in the Intercoastal 20 minute outside Charleston.  We had about 5 hours on the island to hunt as the tide went out and found tons of stuff.  We were a small group of 5.  At the end of the day Ashby explained what everything was and some info about each fossil while we video taped so we would remember what our finds were once we got them home.   I would highly recommend hooking up with one of his trips if you are in the Charleston area.   He does walks and kayak trips.

If you take Bev up on this offer remember to bring a notebook and pencil. A small voice recorder wouldn't hurt either. She'll tell you she doesn't know much, but shes extremely modest. My first time visiting her felt like a university level lecture. Even after reading every book and journal she suggested, I found my next visit as equally rewarding. Every time I go I still learn something. Bev is an amazing source of knowledge and an amazing friend.
