I have property off the central California coast in Monterey County. I have found sharks teeth, hundreds of various shells encased in shale on the property. But this is new to me. I was digging out a new trench for a water line and came across this. Very heavy. to me it definitely seems petrified. Many thanks to you all. -David

Welcome to The Fossil Forum!

Sure looks like some kind of bone, and whale is a good possibility. Cool find!

I'd love to see some pictures of the fossils, and especially the fossil shells, you found!

Best regards,

This is a partial mandible of a Miocene or Pliocene baleen whale - lots of potential localities in that part of California. The holes with the 'gutters' are the mental foramina, from which branches of the mandibular artery are transmitted to the lips and other soft tissue.
