Kane
Looks modern. You may want to try the burn test just to confirm. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer

Miocene_Mason
Count me in the modern camp, looks like unmineralized bone. “...whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been and are being evolved.” ~ Charles Darwin Happy hunting, Mason
Herb
just does not look fossilized, best I can do from a picture "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence"_ Carl Sagen No trees were killed in this posting......however, many innocent electrons were diverted from where they originally intended to go. Rockwood
More pictures are needed, but it doesn't look modern or moose to me. Wouldn't that be some seriously mineral like plaque build up there ?
Brittle Star
Hi, A friend of mine found what looked like a bone on a river foreshore, it was heavier than a modern bone but not completely mineralised. It turned out to be hundreds of years old and showed signs of being butchered, it was classified as a sub fossil. As you have a jaw try matching the flat surface of the teeth to identify species. Kane
Rather than guessing based on a picture, the OP ought to perform the burn test. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer

Rockwood
I don't have a mandible from a moose to compare it to, but I still seriously doubt it is a moose. Was it found in southern (high desert) or northern (forest) Idaho ?

RyanDye
Well now that we've gotten better pictures it could definitely be modern, but Kane is right we really can't say much until the burn test is performed.

Max-fossils
For comparison: Moose Bison So it's definitely not moose, but more likely some kind of bovid! Whether it's bison or cow I really don't know. About the question of whether or not it's a fossil or not, I agree with Kane, the best way to find out is by doing the burn test. Only the results of that will tell confidently! [Pictures are from Google Images] 1 Max Derème "I feel an echo of the lightning each time I find a fossil. Harry Pristis
It's a cow mandible. For comparison: 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest

When I found it, I saw a moose on the walk to the car I suspect that explains why it looks different than I would expect a modern mandible to look. In the Maine woods it's likely that at that age all that would be left is indistinguishable bits of tooth.
