Moroccan Plesiosaur jaw

Aurelius

Recommended Posts

I've been offered this partial jaw. It's not the best example in the whole world, but it does have some in-situ teeth.

Does anyone have any thoughts on it? I believe that is actually Plesi and not some obscure Moroccan crocodile, but let me know if it's something else! I assume Elasmosaurus of some kind?

The teeth look OK to me, I can't see any obvious sign of tampering, although I am always suspicious that one or two could have been added. No actual signs of it though. Any thoughts would be welcomed. My understanding is that these are extremely rare. But still, rarity's not everything.

Apologies for the less-than-great pictures.

Zarafasaura is what is described known from the Oulad Abdoun Basin of Morocco.  Pretty hard to find a real one and it looks ok

Thanks. I'm considering making an offer on it, but that's pretty difficult when there's no frame of reference. They seem rare enough that I can't find any for sale, or that have sold, anywhere.

I would see what others have to say, some might have seen some.  Most of the ones Ive seen have had teeth composited in them.

Looks a bit rough, but also very real. I agree that this looks like a plesiosaur partial skull. You don't see much of those for sale. This is the first real one I've seen for sale.

Nice specimen you've got there :) Teeth definitely look like those of an elasmosaurid.. I agree with @Troodon and @LordTrilobite., I think it is a partial elasmosaurid rostrum

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

The crux of the matter is cost. I've never seen one like that in stores so it has to be expensive.

Also, I recall a member prepping out this jaw out of matrix.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

Thanks, I saw that thread last night, some great work in there. And the complete lower jaw is stunning!

I do not believe the teeth in that reconstruction belonged to the jaw unlike this one which makes it much more desirable

Unfortunately, too expensive for me at the moment as it turns out.
