Please ID bivalves

Coryander

Recommended Posts

Please ID species.

Found it in Algarve, Portugal (miocene, I guess).

I would also ask you to please advise me how to preserve it. Shall I varnish it?

Thank you.

These are steinkerns - internal casts of shells.

They will be difficult to identify as there isn't much detail on the inside of the shells.

Just to answer your question in every one if your inquiries, I don't think you need to do anything to your finds as far as preservation unless they are in danger of flaking apart or crumbling.

They all look to be quite stable.

As Tim said, steinkerns are usually impossible to be assigned to a species. You can always try to guess possibilities (for example, that very big one could be Arctica islandica), but these guesses are always purely a hunch, and can never be backed up with true evidence.

As for preservation, they should be fine as they are. Just put them in a box and it's all good. I've never had any of my steinkerns suffer from any problems.

Did you also find some of those beautiful white fossil scallops in Algarve? :)
