North Sulfur River (NSR) Trip 9-9-18

Recommended Posts

I am rather new to this, but for now rather than explain I actually had more questions, and wanted to share general info about NSR today.

My neighbor and I ventured down from Oklahoma to NSR today to take advantage of the cool temps and recent rain. It wasnt enough rain to do much for NSR,  but we found a few things. Some of them are just rocks we liked - ha.

The up-close photos to follow I wanted to see if anyone would mind helping identify/confirm? That would be great, thanks!!

Nice haul!

If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

Nice group of finds.

To get a good id We need good pictures from all sides and ends with a scale.

It is best to set the object on a solid colored surface to take the pictures. (no hands or fingers)

Regards,

Tony

Looks like phophatic material. Could be anything. Baculites, clams and gastropods are commonly seen phosphatized items. Here are a few of mine,

#4. Initial thought was coral that just happens to look like a bone?

I’d say rock, but other views may help.

#2. Can't tell if it's just a cool shaped/formed rock, or?

Hard to tell if it is bone or phosphatized. Outdoor lighting in direct sunlight may help with that. Indoor lighting messes with quality, texture and color.

I see phosphatized baculite fragments. Looks a bit like Baculite asper  species, but would need to see the suture lines.

I see lots of petrified wood too. Often it is palm wood.

Great feedback, thank you!! I will take more with sunlight and solid back drop when able, but here's another I believe is bone?

Yes, looks like bone. We call them chunkasaurus. No telling what it is.

If you’re on Facebook you may enjoy the Dallas Paleontological Society Group Page. A lot of people post NSR finds on there. That’s if you’re not there already.

I'll message you when I get home from offshore and we'll meet up so you can find some bone and artifacts.
