Anthony Gees
Hi, this is a find from high up the beach in the dry sand found 50m east from Clacton pier, I dont think its bone or ivory, it was in two pieces when found so I stuck them together, a lot of material from the Pleistocene and before found in this location due to the beach recharge, Bison horn?, any help with a possible ID would be great, many thanks.
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Looks like a bit of mammoth tusk. The Schreger Lines in the cross section are diagnostic. Regards, Schreger-lines. Interesting. The descriptions as "engine-turning" or "cross-hatching" are perfect. They indeed resemble the cross-hatching one finds on the inner walls of a gas engine cylinders after machining. As far as engine-turning goes, that is what pocket-watch guys call the geometric engraving done on pocket watch cases. I happen to have a crisp one handy to show what I mean. It looks like either of those. Very cool and good to know. Thanks. And congratulations to the new owner of the piece.

abyssunder
I agree with Tim about the Schreger lines. Only proboscidean tusk have that feature. You have a partial proboscidean tusk.
