Newark Supergroup fish (Bergen NJ)

Hello!

I was cleaning out the trunk of my car and found some material from a hunt at North Bergen NJ a few months back. I cracked a few open and found this one.

My big question is, on the right side, is that a fish skull or just a coprolite or something?

@Jeffrey P @Fossildude19

Thanks!

Looks like a skull to me, Frank! :)  :dinothumb:

Nice piece!

I've found that skulls will very frequently have that yellow dot on them - maybe the remains of an otolith?

Cool find. :D

Man, that is cool! Obviously, I really took my time breaking everything open that I brought home from that trip but I'm pretty excited about this one!

You should be!

Not many people can claim to have found Triassic coelacanths by themselves! :)

Even if it is a partial - very cool in my book.

Awesome! I'll have to try to get down there some day. I'm glad you posted it. Good find! It sure helps to have Tim ID it too! Thanks, Tim. I was looking through some old fishy shale we found (in 2013!) yesterday, and found a few small slabs thick enough to split. I had high hopes but all I found were a few scales.  Great job, Frank!

It's a pretty short list...

What an exciting find for you. Frank! Congratulations!

Purty cool.  Ive always wanted one of these.  But I have one question,  @Fossildude19, if that yellow spot is a part of an ear bone, why would it turn yellow?  Just curious.

I'm guessing due to mineral make up, Ron.

I think it is different material from the bone before fossilization, so that it changes to the yellow, powdery substance while the bones become more mineralized.

Just a guess, honestly.
