Welcome to the Forum.

 

My guess is that it is not a fossil, but some kind of weathered sedimentary stone, possibly sandstone. Of course, providing any information as to where it was found may prove beneficial. 

 

The black surface from sanding is certainly making this an odd piece.

wife's uncle passed away and this was given to my wife. not sure what it is. Story passed along is dinosaur tooth, but not buying it. Any thoughts?

Piece is 7x5x3 inches and weighs north of 10 pounds. Wife sanded down top side and it is shiny black.

Guessing found near Mojave Valley, AZ since he lived there, but cannot confirm that.
