Footprint (dinosaur?)

Recommended Posts

This is a “is it real” thread and also looking for an  ID.

Although I suspect that the ID part will be impossible. Maybe someone may recognise the presevation/colour and be able to have a guess at a location.

I picked this footprint up at auction. The location/any information on it has been lost unfortunately.

The pictures don't really do it justice it looks fantastic and 3-D to the eye.

The specimen doesn't seem to have any coating on and has someones collection number in it. So i’m guessing it’s the real deal?

I think your have to call it a Grallator an ichnogenus which was covers a common type of small, three-toed print of bipedal theropod dinosaurs. I never heard of them been faked by been carved on to stone. I would say it is real a couple of more close ups may help.  Maybe @Birdman can help.

Are those scale impressions I see on the foot cast?

Like skin impressions? Not sure do you want closer pics?

Yeah, closeups always help ofc. But right now, in the six photos, I see some subtle bumps in photos 3, 5 and 6 that look like they might be scale impressions.

I’m not sure you’ll be able to tell, they could be just bumps in the rock?

Just to compare textures of rock to try and rule that out . Please can you do some other photos of rock. It is a beautiful ichnofossil.

I’m not sure of the usual value of footprints but i’m pretty sure i got this for an absolute steal at auction. The sellers pictures really were unclear and barely highlighted it.

I have a feeling this is one of those really worn down/eroded footprint casts. Looks like some sort of sandstone, to me.

I'm not seeing a size listed for this item.  :headscratch:

Not sure you can call it Grallator, as the toes seem to be splayed too far apart.

Something similar to Anomoepus, or some other ichnogenus.

Hm, yeah maybe just weird bumps.

Still a nice footprint though.

As Tim mentioned, what is the size of this piece?  As Bobby asked, do you have photos of other parts of the rock?

Is there anything else in the rock that could be a clue to origin?  What type of rock is it?

Without provenance, these questions are important to your initial inquiry.

Does look and feel like sandstone.

Looking at it the middle toe extends slightly higher but missed it in this light, probably 7-8cm then.
