Here is another Mississippian shark tooth that I need some ID help with. I am still waiting for a bit of information from the seller but I am pretty sure this is a Burlington Limestone tooth from the Biggsville Quarry, IL. I had asked the seller if he had any Venustodus teeth and he sent me a few pictures of this one. It looks similar to other venustodus teeth I saw as I researched this but it looks a little different from others that had the same ID. It certainly seems to be a really nice tooth and one the kids would like learning about !

My gut says this is probably what I am looking for and the sellers ID is correct. I do not fully trust my gut with Mississippian shark teeth though lol So I thought it best to put this to the forum and see what my fellow TFF members think. Any thoughts on this one ??

Yes that looks like  a typical Venustodus tooth from the Mississippian.

Venustodus is actually a holocephalid, similar to the modern chimaera/ghost sharks. They are very interesting creatures.

I'm researching vertebrates from Biggsville quarry, as a matter of fact. As someone who has seen a lot of these teeth, yes, it looks like Venustodus sp. Good luck figuring out which species it is, however: they're difficult to differentiate, especially if they're worn.

Nice tooth!

Thank you. I assumed Eugenodontid. They are fascinating critters

Awesome. Good luck with your research. We use our teeth for education programs  so I am not concerned about getting it to a species level. It is a nice tooth and a bargain really.

Thank you! I'll hopefully post about it on the forum once it's all said & done.
