Savvas
Hello to everyone, what do you people think about this small foot fossil? The seller says it is Mycterosaurus. I would really like to read some opinions. Thank you all in advance. Best regards, Savvas
ynot
Looks funny to Me, the uneven number of finger bones in each digit seems odd. But I am unfamiliar with this particular critter. Maybe @Harry Pristis can help. Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Randyw
Here is A picture of a confirmed foot fossil for comparison. Looks to me like they got some bones missing or out of place? At least 2 finger bones and a few from palm?
Mark Kmiecik
I think it's a composite also. Too many distal segments that are more robust than the proximal. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
Pemphix
I agree being it a composite imo. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/292460390_Restudy_of_Mycterosaurus_longiceps_Reptilia_Pelycosauria_from_the_Lower_Permian_of_Texas https://www.researchgate.net/publication/304284764_A_Re-Description_of_'Mycterosaurus'_smithae_an_Early_Permian_Eothyridid_and_Its_Impact_on_the_Phylogeny_of_Pelycosaurian-Grade_Synapsids https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/622271 https://www.academia.edu/14920425/Restudy_of_Mycterosaurus_longiceps_Reptilia_Pelycosauria_from_the_Lower_Permian_of_Texas
connorp
I don’t think composite is the right word. They are likely unassociated pieces that are being sold (or implied) as associated.
Savvas
Indeed, the seller states that are not specifically the right pieces from only one individual
Randyw
Still a nice looking piece depending on what he’s asking for it....
