ashcraft
A student brought this in for ID, it doesn't look like the normal bovine remains that I get. Any ideas? Brent Ashcraft ashcraft, brent allen

Harry Pristis
A student brought this in for ID, it doesn't look like the normal bovine remains that I get. Any ideas? Brent Ashcraft Sorry, Brent -- there's not enough left to make a good guess except artiodactyl. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
ashcraft
I hadn't even considered that the bone wasn't relatively whole, it doesn't look broken. I looked at the calcaneums in my osteology book, but they don't have deer, of all things. Thanks guys. ashcraft, brent allen
ashcraft
Found it, between antelope and black bear. Harry, you were correct about not being enough left, size range is about right for white-tail though. I'll tell the student- Calcaneum from an artiodactyl, about the size of a white-tailed deer. That should be good enough to keep my legendary status as knower of all things obscure. Thanks again guys, Brent Ashcraft ashcraft, brent allen
Harry Pristis
For other readers, here are some artiodactyl calcanea. These images are also in my "Bones" album in the Forum Gallery. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
