Allosaurus fragilis rib? Is it authentic? Broken!

Recommended Posts

Hello all this is my first post. I recently came into possession of what I believe to be a Allosaurus rib fossil.  Unfortunately the specimen snapped in a few places during transit. This dose however give me the opportunity to post pictures of the broken sections. Not exactly what I was expecting to see, but then again this is my first large fossil so I don't really know what I was expecting to see.

some information I was provided from the previous owner:

'"last 6 inches of the distal end, is restorated.
The rest of the rib was found largely intact. Found on private land in the
Morrison Formation
"

Any information that can be provided to me would be a great help.

Debbie

Does not look like a theropod rib much to robust, possible herbivore like a sauropod. Here is what  Allosaurus ribs look like, thin and flat.

Thank you so much for your reply! So you would say it's authentic but a herbivore rib due to its robust build?

Very difficult to say whats real with the photos provided.  Try taking more pictures of the proximal end

It looks like you’re dealing with the top and bottom halves of one long sauropod rib

Thank you very much for your input. I really appreciate the help I have been receiving here. It would seem that I have acquired an authentic fossil rib, however from an herbivore instead of a Allosaurus. Possibly from a sauropod.

Thank you all for the helpful replies. I do appreciate it especially as I am new to these forums. I knew there was repairs made but I figured for the price it was a nice specimen to examine and display. This is only the second "big" piece in my collection. The first is a mammoth vertebrae.
