I found these on the local riverbank while my daughter was busy picking up a load more Carboniferous rugose corals. In the North East of England. Are they anything of interest?

The first looks like a Stigmaria lycopod root fossil.

Not sure on the second, maybe another Stigmaria?

3rd one looks like a cross section of a Calamites, maybe. Or a trace fossil.

Last one is definitely a trace fossil. (Ichnofossil)

I agree with Tim on all three, you have two Stigmaria specimens, the first of which has a small Calamites cross section - neat!

Thank you both. Great help as always.

My little girl was hoping this was some kind of footprint/claw mark but I wasn’t convinced enough to bring it home

I understand her, it does look like a print, but i'm also not completely convinced.

You made the right call! There aren't any footprints in the Carboniferous around here - that's probably more invertebrate trace fossil stuff, if anything.
