CluelessAboutFossils
I dug this directly from the so-called “red bed” (making it Permian) in the north sulphur river. I thought it might be petrified wood, but I am confused as to what the piece is embedded in it. Any ideas?

facehugger
The "Red Zone" is still part of the Ozan Formation. Most definitely NOT Permian. It is Cretaceous. If I were to hazard a guess, this looks like vertebrate material to me, probably from a fish, possibly jawbone. @JarrodB is the man when it come to NSR. Let's see what he thinks.

I was just about to say that doesn't look like wood to me and the area around it isn't too "woody" either. 1 Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them! JarrodB
Tooth socket for sure. Not enough left for me to say mosasaur or fish.
