Alternative combination: Lycoptera muroii (Takai 1943).
Originally described as Asiatolepis muroii Takai 1943, this fish is considered by most authors to belong to the genus Lycoptera. Zhang (2010) removed L. muroii from the genus Lycoptera and resurrected the original genus Asiatolepis.

Emended diagnosis from Zhang 2010. "Interfrontal suture sinuous, first and second infraorbitals narrow, fourth infraorbital nearly semicircular, parapophyses small, pectoral fin rays I+6-7+L pelvic fin rays I+4, dorsal fin rays I+7-8, anal fin rays I+9-10, vertebrae 40—41, hypurals 8."
