SERRATOLAMNA FLORIDA EOCENE

Harry Pristis

These teeth (two anterior, two lateral) are from the Ocala Group Limestone which is exposed in the Northwestcentral part of Florida. These teeth are sometimes overlooked where they occur, in favor of the much larger, easier to notice Carcharodon sokolowi (formerly C. auriculatus).

THE FOSSIL VERTEBRATES OF FLORIDA mistakenly identifies these teeth as being from juvenile Otodus obliquus, apparently relying on a 1969 masters degree thesis by Norm Tessman dealing with the fossil sharks of Florida. Otodus obliquus is not otherwise reported from Florida, as far as I know. Owners of this 2001 book may wish to take note (see page 85).
