Calippus proplacidus
In Florida, the Tribe PROTOHIPPINI includes the genera Protohippus and Calippus with eleven different species identified as of 2001. These are not common fossils anywhere in Florida.
This example includes upper cheek teeth, P2 through M2. It was excavated at a well-known mine site, now reclaimed and buried. This site produced some very interesting Middle Miocene vertebrate fossils including my favorite, Epicyon haydeni, a large "hyaenoid" dog.
