Carcharodon carcharias (Neonate)

Pisco Formation, Departamento de Arequipa, Sitio Sacaco, Peru

3rd Right Upper (Intermediate)

A small tooth from a newborn great white shark (~ 1.5 m / 5 ft total length). This is a rare intermediate tooth which is mesially-slanted, and reduced in size relative to adjacent teeth. The smaller size of the 3rd upper anterior is an adaptation unique to the dentitions of Lamniforms, thought to concentrate the bite force in the first two upper anteriors.
