i recently acquired a Jiaguwen, 甲骨文, specimen from a local antique fair. Jiaguwen, direct translation meaning "turtle bone language", is evidence of the beginning of the chinese language. ancient chinese settlers used hard material like turtle shells and cow bones as paper to practice their writings or to use as letters or charms. studies on Jiaguwen started in 1899, when the first Jiaguwen were discovered, carved on turtle shells. later samples show that they have also been carved on bone. currently scientists are publishing a dictionary for Jiaguwen. it would be really cool to see what this carved passage says by decoding it! B)

this was discovered in henan province, china. it approximately dates to 5,000 years ago.
