Son Jack in for the last week , hunting the Peace every other day, I am going to need a break SOON. Yesterday the fossil gods smiled. Here are some of the finds. An Equus tooth with transverse HSBs and a little silicification . A Sea Urchin spine. Can these be IDed to a species ? I am always amazed at the few who survive myas to fall into my sieve almost perfect, A Bear lower canine.. It has been 4-5 years since finding my previous Bear canine, Arctodus pristinus. I am not yet sure on the Genus/species for this one. A whale tooth. Although never identified as a Florida fossil fauna, this one bears a striking resemblance to Aulophyster morricci, Here is the one I would like an Identification, Clearly a Vertebra., and almost as clearly a marine mammal because of the air pockets in the bone. Possibly an Atlas or an Axis, but I have not seen the like this size.. Unlikely whale. So possibly Dolphin. Inputs and suggested candidates greatly appreciated. It it a Vert? Which Vert ? What are the fauna candidates? Thanks for any and all assistance.

Went Hunting today , 3rd time in 5 days. I am aching but heading North and my next opportunity will be April 11th. Clear water, lots of gravel, some fossils... Got a couple of more Turtle "Peace Signs", but 2 of these finds are excellent: No roots, no dentin, no cementum... just enamel... @Balance Well Jp, you know something about horses. What can you tell me about the horse that owned this tooth? and here is a 2nd tooth, same thing No roots, No dentin, No Cementum.... just enamel. and found in my 2nd last sieve.. I love late finds... keeping me digging. and this is a Big tooth.... Note that the chewing surface is barely touched and look at the detail that remains... You never see this kind of detail except when the animal died shortly after the tooth emerged.. I am not sure this one is deciduous but it is clearly unusual and close to perfect... Enjoy.

I was out hunting yesterday on the Peace River. I returned to a spot I had hunted last Thursday, Feb 28th, It rained over the weekend. Many /most locations were too deep to dig. I LIKE deep water because it is aerobic exercise for my lower back but I prefer not to be holding my breadth as I did. I did not find a large volume of fossils, many were bones, especially Dugong ribs which I tossed back. Small Shark teeth, Turtle Osteoderms, an Alligator Osteoderms, Deer tine, Broken Equus tooth, One question is that Bovid tooth... It is really nice... I would certainly like it to be Bison.. I like this Medial Phalanx... I do not think it is Horse, Might be Tapir... It is definitely small I found a Carpal that is smaller than I am used to finding for Camelids. I may indeed check the Tapir carpals. Same thing with this Ear Bone, too small to be Equus but similar to Equus . Both Horse and Tapir are Perissodactyla. I have never identified a Tapir ear bone. Then there were more unusual bones... unusual in the sense that I have no clue.. This bone has articular facets...like a carpal or tarpal, but the following 2 Photos of the same bone does not look like any carpal I have seen.. Time for me to do a lot of looking All assistance and suggestions gratefully appreciated... Jack

This is an Iowa sand bar find. The (large) molars seem to be more rectangular than other more square equus teeth images I have seen. Also, there are only four teeth with one not yet emerged. I believe this indicates that this jaw is from a young animal with only having the deciduous "milk" teeth. Any help zeroing in on a specific species would be appreciated!

Out hunting Monday. The days of the year are passing quickly. Here is a place that is more likely early Pleistocene, where it is possible to collect the transition of horse teeth. I found many small shark teeth including Hemipristis, Mako, Bull , Dusky, and large G cuvier Tigers.. It is always enjoyable to pick up 5 or 6 from a sieve when other fossils are less frequent. Here are those other fossils. It is a mixture of some bones ( Calcaneum, long leg bone) I would like to identify, some broken fossils (Glyptodont, Armadillo, Mammoth) , even some curious looking rocks (toss in the sieve, investigate later).. some fossils from the seas that used to cover Florida.... Just sharing what falls into my sieve... My last 5 times out, I have been finding 1 really nice upper Hemi. Here is Monday's entry (above).... but I gave this thread the title of Horses A wolf tooth (Canine present in Stallions, helpful for fighting other Stallions for a female)... These are pretty rare find for me, maybe once a year and this one is kind of distinctive, narrow, longer than normal A broken tridactly horse upper tooth, probably Nannippus peninsulatus. I really love finding these... Takes me back to great fossil hunting memories. Then a very small Non tridactyl tooth... I wonder if this is the transitional horse that @fossillarry occasionally references. They all look like Equus, but it is the small size that is grabbing my attention. and then a couple of more normal sized Equus Teeth... that are 26 and 27 APL respectively Enjoy....
