  1. We’re never found anything this large, no clue on an ID. any responses are appreciated:) we have found glyptodon, bison, mastodon fossils in the same area
  2. Been a while since I have posted, but I have a few more trip reports to get done eventually. Decided to start with my first trip on the Peace River in Florida. Was in Florida for a while visiting family and had a day or two to do some investigating. Plenty of research in the forum and other sites lead me to hiring a guide, Fred Mazza, which I think was well worth the money for the learning experience alone. I am hoping to visit the area once a year, so I am hoping this experience prevented some numerous trial and error runs out to the Peace River. I would highly recommend Fred and his tour, some really nice fossils were found by other members of the tour group and it gave me a handle on what equipment I might need in the future. I agree with the sentiment around the forum that a canoe or kayak is essential. This trip was especially nice since the river was so low. Best finds below, sorry about the flash in the pictures: 2. These were the best teeth, pretty happy with it for my first time out there. I probably found over 150. Excited to find my first Megs even if small. 2. Dugong ribs 3. Florida fossils are not my expertise, I think these are mostly all turtle shell fragments. Miocene aged? 4. Curious about what forum members think of these. In order I see unknown tooth on the far left, then horse teeth, gator scutes, barracuda tooth, gator tooth, and fish teeth. 5. Some more unknown bones with unusual shape. 6. Bonus best Sanibel Island snail shells Help is appreciated, thanks for reading!

    Oligocene Dugong Vertebra?

I recently purchased a large collection of fossils from the old Terramar Pit in Pasco County, Florida. The collection contains the typical Lower Oligocene Suwannee Formation inverts along with Suwannee shark teeth and sink hole material that I assume is Upper Pleistocene based on some Alligator material. Also included is a vertebra identified as coming from a Suwannee Dugong. I have my doubt as it is the same color as the sink hole material, but hoping some of the vert people on the forum can help in either confirm or discount dugong.
  4. This spot keeps putting out, between three of us, the running tally is 26 megs, 1 Chub and 3 makos..I wish i was younger, id still be digging 🤣

    Possible canine

So i hit up the spot that keeps on giving today. Popped this thing out and I initially thought it was a barracuda tooth until i looked at the presumptive interior and it appears grooved, its also hollow. Thoughts?

Lrg Bone Frag ID. Peace River, FL (4/24)

Hey all! (Part 2) Requesting your help identifying a some fun larger bone fragments found by @jcor246 and me down on the ol’ Peace River, FL. (For brevity, separate ID posts featuring the non-toothy specimens collected on this outing will follow shortly.🆔🆘) Thanks, Jena and Josh

Camel or Bovid tooth ID please

Hi, this came from the river and I cant tell what it is. I'm hoping its not too far gone to ID. From what I can see in my reference book and online, it looks like it could be molar from a Camel or bovine. I'm wondering if someone more knowledgeable might be able to ID based on what is still present. Thank you

Peace River, FL Teeth ID (April 2024)

Hey all! Requesting your help identifying an interesting selection of teeth found by @jcor246 and me down on the ol’ Peace River, FL. (For brevity, separate ID posts featuring the non-toothy specimens collected on this outing will follow shortly.🆔🆘) Thanks, Jena and Josh
  9. These two were found on the beach on the East coast of Florida and I'm guessing the first one is a denticle of some sort, but not totally sure. To me, the second one is reminiscent of a very well worn shark tooth, but I cant recall ever seeing a shark tooth like this. In fact, I think I've only found five or six teeth in this area the past couple years. The kind of mineral fragments I notice in this area are usually calcite with the texture of crushed ice, this is waxy. Having found silicified bivalves and what not- this is much more translucent. The last photo is magnified. Has anyone else found these or know what they are? I appreciate any help or ideas.

    Strange bone

Popped this strange bone out when i was digging yesterday, any ideas on what it may be? im stumped.
  11. I initially went on a scouting mission on last Thursday to find some new river bed to plunge my shovel into, walking downriver i stumbled (literally) over massive dugong rib frags underwater and poking out of the bank. I said to myself, this is too good to be true, undug river sections on a popular stretch of the peace? You bet! Fast forward to yesterday, we started digging over a unique formation (Clay, gravel, clay)..it was gangbusters for the 4 of us all day..23 megs and a mako yonked out of the river. Whale bone and the megs Peace river fragladons Horse teeth (L to R) Glyptodon osteoderm, Mastadon tooth enamel, Holmesina osteoderm and two dermal scutes Mystery bone
  12. So, it’s just my imagination running wild but I think the interior side of this bone fragment looks off.
  13. Ok this is a fossil Hill ! Ha ha! On private land. They told me the hill was there when the arrived. It will soon be spread out for a new house. so sad. Here what I've found so far. 1st picture of the Hill!!

    Peace River, 4/26/2024

Out hunting today. Friend Dave, last hunt of the Season, a snowbird heading North. I was not finding much and he was, so he invited me to come dig in the hole he created. I started finding interesting fossils and , kept on thinking I am about to find a really good , rare fossil. I found some shark teeth and even a Meg. I found some pieces of Mammal teeth and a piece of fossilized wood.... A pretty little Glyptodon osteoderm A couple of Bullas, One Dolphin, maybe Stenella... The other... Whale.. Interesting .. Do whale Bullas come this small. Finally, I stopped looking for that "special" fossil.. I was hunting my favorite river, with a friend, it was warm and the sun was shining.... An unusual thing happened. Fred Mazza charters Peace River Fossil Hunting. As we were hunting a large group passed by. One women did a double take as she paddle a canoe past us and said to me " I know your face." As she passed she asked "Are you on some blog"? Answer: I am Shellseeker on TFF. Response I knew it was you!!! I think she recognized my Avatar... Black Wetsuit and baseball cap... Enjoy.

    Fossil encased in rock

Found this a while back on a landsite I was wondering if its worth taking out of the rock or if its better to use it as a display piece. Along with if anyone has any idea of what it could be, I think its a whale ear-bone or a tortoise leg spur. It for sure would have that bone valley blue in any case.

    Fossils in FL panhandle(?)

Hello, I hope this is the appropriate location to post this question, my apologies if it isn't. Does anyone have advice or location suggestions for fossil hunting in the Florida panhandle region? The few locations that have been suggested to me *appear* to not legally allow collecting. I am alright with just observing, but my preference is to have the option to collect. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    ID of shark teeth

I recently found a few shark teeth on the beaches of Ft. Pickens (Gulf Islands National Seashore) on the Gulf of Mexico. The tooth in the top left corner is from a Great White. The second from the right on the top row is from a Bull Shark (I think), and I believe the tooth on the bottom right corner is from a Lemon Shark. Can anyone help me identify the rest? Many thanks in advance!
  18. Hello all! I'm hoping to get a bit more information on this "tooth" I found in the surf at Panama City Beach, Florida, Bay County. I was literally telling my wife that I really would like to find a shark's tooth on the beach and then found this about 5 minutes later. It doesn't look like any of the shark's teeth I have ever seen elsewhere and doesn't seem to have any edge serations. I'm just hoping to get some idea as to: 1. Is this an older or fossilized tooth? 2. What shark or other animal is it likely from? Not well visualized from the photos (best seen on pic #4 and #6), but this tooth has at least two foramina that extend longitudinally from the top down to the lateral protrusions near the point or apex. You can see their origins along the upper mounting edge. If it really is a tooth, I'm curious as to what the purpose of the foramina would be? Perhaps sensory nerve canals of some sort? Venom injection ports?? Interesting structure either way... I'm a total novice who just happened to find this on the beach a few days ago. So, any information anyone can provide is definitely welcome! I hope the photos are satisfactory, but please let me know if I need to redo anything. This is the best resolution I can do with my phone. Thank you!! MrPisky
  19. My friend Dave is a snowbird == returns to a northern State 1st week of May. He is anxious for a few last hunting days until November. We were out today to a spot that has numerous small shark teeth and occasional interesting finds. I forgot to bring a sieve... For the 1st 3 hours, doing 10 sieves an hour. I pretty much was getting skunked. Relatively few shark teeth and 1 occasional. I do like little dolphin teeth. I think I'll be able to ID this one... Then things picked up.... Twice as many small shark teeth, and more than a few occasional. That's an Equus Earbone middle right. and about 1/2 of a sloth carpal upper left... But there is one find on this layout that I am REALLY pleased to have if it turns out to be what I think it is... I even like it if it does not turn out to be a Peccary premolar. APL 23 x W 17 x CH 32 mm This one made my trip. Enjoy
  20. This piece of bone was found in a pile of fill dirt at a construction site near the Peace River in Florida. Can anyone identify the mammal and what part of the body this bone is from. Thanks.
