I found this June 13th laying fully uncovered on the sand. The weather was horrible and the tide was very high due to the tropical storm in the Gulf. I’m very new at fossil identification and any help with identifying and how I should preserve it will be very much appreciated.

My good friend Rob in Florida, not a Forum member, suggested that I post pics of the odontocete whale skull he found at an undisclosed location in the Pliocene of FL. He has sent pics to Smithsonian and they believe it to be Kogiopsis floridanum, a form of sperm whale described from a jaw section. He's enjoying the prep work, most of which can be accomplished without his scribe, and it appears that there are predation marks on what is left of the snout. Great find.

Hi. i found this fossilized tooth a couple of years ago. It was found on the beach on the north end of Amelia Island, Florida. They dredge sand to restore the beach fairly often which makes for great sharks teeth finding. So. Is it a bison tooth? Any guesses on age? Thank you for helping me solve this mystery.

I believe it is possibly a whale vertebra. It is light for it's size. Found inland Venice, FL in a dirt pile. Image 7414 shows flat surface of fossil. The remaining images are lateral views.

I have an unknown, dense, arced fossil that is solid. Image 1 shows the smooth, angled surface. I cannot find a reference for this item. Found in spoil pile today in inland Venice. Surrounding material from Pleistocene. Thank you in advance. This should be challenging... Regards, Michael

Fossils with questions are tossed in a special bucket for thinking about when hunting opportunities start drying up. That time has come. Here a couple: The question: Mastodon or Gomph; I have found Gomph fragments in this location. Another 2 inch fossil, that I almost threw away!! Laying in the sieve, I thought it was unidentifiable bone, but then noted the odd ends. So Bone or Tooth .... If you decided tooth for this 2nd one, you might check out the fossils in this old thread!!! Thanks for all responses.

Hello, I have positively identified three other teeth today by looking through the FF gallery and UF Florida Museum collections. This tooth is different from the Equus examples. I could not match it up with camel either. Some of you have incredible collections. Fossil collected from retention pond spoils in North Port, FL. Hole depth 5-10 feet below sea level. Area near Little Salt Spring. Thank you in advance for your knowledge. Regards, Michael

Hello, I am a middle school Earth Science and Crime Scene Investigation Teacher in Sarasota County, FL. I live in Venice close to the Myakka River. I enjoy fossil hunting inland. Always looking for shark teeth to give to students. Love gopher tortoises and recently found ancient tortoise clasts on our building lot. Thank you in advance for answering my questions.

Hello, all. I just wanted to introduce myself to the fossil loving community. I live in northeast Florida (Jax area), and I am looking for any information regarding fossil searching in my area. I’m am particularly fond of shark teeth and have been beach searching for years. With the current pandemic, my interest in finding new spots has increased. And thanks to YouTube, I have been looking in creeks with little luck. I have a few leads that I can’t wait to search. I'm here to share my finds, look for possible locations in my area or those areas within fl and help identifying unknown fossils. Thank you for the add and I can’t wait to share my finds!!

Hello, I live in between Venice and North Port, FL, close to the Myakka. I have been finding tortoise fossils/clasts in my neighborhood. Most are in moist clay within a foot from surface. This location is SW of the Peace River Formation. I find deer antler, Meg teeth, and manatee ribs fully fossilized here also. This is Pleistocene area. I have not found fully fossilized tortoise. Mine are not totally solidified. I find many scutes/ spurs along with the clasts that are hardened. Looking for advice. Photos of one sample attached. Regards, Michael

Found on surface spoils after pond excavated. Venice, FL , 15 miles southwest of Peace River Formation. Depth was no greater than 15 feet. Possibly Arcadia formation. Pleistocene epoch. Fossil is very dense and smooth. I have found many fossils in this area but none this color or density. Note: striations on last 2 images. Looking forward to learning and sharing some other finds.

I found this tooth in the overburden sight at my work. I actually found this tooth first, and went to grab a survey flag to mark the pile. On the way I found the shark tooth i just shared in an other post. It was an exciting day. Anyway, from looking at the molar patterns of other horse tooth fossils I think that this is a three-toed horse (Perissodactyla Miohippus ?). Judging from what I think is wear on the tooth ridges, I would hazard a guess that the horse was an old timer? While I personally am not fond of horses, it was really nice to have pieces that I could clearly identify for once, instead of various fragments of a fossil jigsaw puzzle.

Hi all, I received a jar of fossils from my grandfather a couple years ago before he passed away, and was wondering what type of tooth it was. Most of the stuff in the jar is from Florida but I’m not positive everything is. It is 2 1/4 inches long. my guess is it’s either a mammoth or horse tooth.
