    Peace River Rapids

Hello - first post here. I've been lurking in the background reading lots and lots of your posts in the forum. Very informative, really enjoy looking at the pics of the fossils being found on the Peace river. I noticed in some of the pictures what appears to be rapids on the river - appears to be shallow water moving over rocks. Where on the river would these rapids be located? On the satellite images it looks like there may be some rapids 5.24 miles (following the river) or 4.2 as the crow flies - north of the Gardner ramp near Oak Creek. Has anyone made it that far north from Gardner and checked out the area for fossils? I'm trying to plan a trip and was thinking of using a canoe with a small outboard to travel from Gardner to Oak Creek. Is it possible to motor on the Peace river north of Gardner - or are there too many obstacles or shallow water? Thanks in advance for any information you can share - hope to see you on the river soon! G

    Durango Colorado?

Hey, I'm going to Durango next summer and I was wondering if I could find any fossils there, and if so, how can I find them.
  4. Hi Everyone, I’m headed to Jacksonville FL for Christmas and was looking to get into some fossil hunting somehow some way. Looking for any recommendations within a 4 hour radius. Paid guided hunt? Popular creeks, beaches, or rivers? Would like to take my nieces out but if that’s not feasible then that’s ok. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi from Israel

  6. Hi people! I need help for identifying these two canine roots. They were found in some Cave in Southeastern Serbia, along with Cave Bear,Cave Hyena,Bison and Deer bones. I got this as a gift from my friend who has found them also this smaller partial tooth which i think also that is from a Cave Hyena. He thinks that the roots belongs to Cave Hyena canines. On the last picture u can see the scale with his teeth collection and with 3 teeth that he gave me. Thanks

    Fossil du Jour

Hey everyone, I thought it would be interesting if a thread was made for fossils we have found most recently whether that be in situ and posted the day after the trip or if you find something new while going through matrix or concretions you may have brought home. I'll start it off, here is a snail and baculites I found today when cracking into some of my Pierre shale material from Wyoming.
  8. I did another ammonite hunting trip to South Dakota this last September with my youngest son and we brought home a ton of rock. Last week my son came over and we got to work. He set up my tile saw with some hot water and I started marking rock where it needed to be cut. We cut a lot of crab concretions too but thats for another thread. I have to say it was a very fun day but now I have my work cut out for me, pun intended. There is some easy stuff to prep and of course some harder stuff to prep. I will start with an easy one. This little ammonite came apart and part of the living chamber was on the opposing piece of rock. I marked that hunk of rock, my son cut it and after it had dried I glued it back on and after 24 hours I scribed off the rock and WaaaaLaaaaa!! This piece is still not done. Im going to cut off a bunch more rock and finish it up so it stands nice and is still in part of the matrix. I believe this is Discoscaphites conradi found in the Fox Hills Formation and is Cretaceous in age. RB

    Green Mill Run

Can anyone who has recently visited or lives near Green Mill Run tell me how it is at the moment? I am planning to collect some fossils from there on Saturday or Sunday for a school project, but I am somewhat concerned by the water temperature and the possibility of rain (though the forecast indicates it won't be too bad on Saturday). Would it be dangerous to go there in the rain in this season?
  12. Ok, when I wake up, drowzy, make some coffee, then into the computer room. This is what I see. Lots more in the display cases behind me with no room left! Then I open the top drawer, more crab fossils, forgot about those. Lots more in the garage! then I realize, there are two more in the glove boxes of my 2 trucks. Now I wonder where else I have more? We all have problems. We all need help. but for me, Im not sure how I can find a cure? But for now, I will just smile and go on. This is a problem I can live with. All I need now is more to prep. Do I have a disease? RB

    Absolutely new to fossil hunting

on this piece, there are several various fossils. I beleive they are all encased in this clay rock. Found in Dresden Tn 38225 in a old creek.
  14. Hello everybody, I am a new member on the forum. I am collecting fossils since I was 12 and I am specialy interested in ammonites. I collect a lot of invertebrate and more recently I have found quite a few interesting fishes. I love to go and collect them myself in France, Germany, England and Belgium. I am also swapping with lots of collectors. I am trevelling in canada (Montréal) december 13th till the 31th and was wondering if any of you would know fossils collector there. I would be delighted to share my passions and why not samples with any one. Thanks for your help
  15. While taking pics of some calcite under long wavelength UV light, I noticed a glow coming from my one and only Fox Hills ammonite (thanks to @RJB). I thought it was rather beautiful. All of my fossils that have calcite preservation fluoresced nicely.

    Myrtle Beach?

Hi- Does anyone know how Myrtle Beach fossil hunting is these days? I'm planning to visit mid December. What should I expect? Where should I go? I hear they are re-nourishing the beaches-does this hurt my chance to find anything? Thanks

Do you see what I see.... FINALLY!

I loved this rock, and I really wanted to find the fossils hiding in it. It looked like a carved mother and child, or tied bunches of wheat, until I played with it in vinegar. There are lots of things I would love to share visually FINALLY!!! There is one, microscopic, fascinating hole with something that looks like a “gear” within it. Thanks- Karen
  23. HERE’S THE CHALLENGE! Please assist me by recommending the method you think is best for extricating fossils I know are present in the ocean rocks pictured below to the point of being “identifiable”. It has been tremendously frustrating for me to share pictures of rocks I know contain fossils, and even more so to be unable to photograph them or “clean them up” to the point where they are CLEAR. The only method of removing rock I have tried so far has been vinegar. I now have muriatic acid AND a Dremel. I have never used either before, but I have researched their usage AND “my youngest”, who is a chemistry wiz, will be home, and he has used both, (but neither on specimens that are this tiny. For example, #1 is about 1.75” x 1” OR 4.4 cm x 2.5 cm ) For rocks #1 through #8, tell me, based on the rocks, what method you think I should start with/which should be primary, for 1 or ideally for all 8. (And what kind of rock/mineral you believe it is.) Thank you! Karen
  24. Hello! New to the forum and plan to introduce myself properly later- I've spent a lot of time hunting in Southern Indiana near Bloomington and at the St. Leon cut- going to Indiana Caverns tomorrow and wondering if there's any spots nearby to hunt for fossils. Spatial reasoning is not my forte- if anyone has specific directions to a great spot I'd be so grateful! On break from teaching art to my high school students- would love to make some great finds over my break to show my kids
  25. T3 of Beijing international airport. All the restroom walls have limestone plates with fossil-like features. I am not sure even they are fossils or not, as some of them have the outlook----instead of cross sections----of typical fossils. If they are indeed fossils, what is a good guess of its age?
