My friend was telling me the other day that in the Wilmington, NC area, ( I think New Hanover County) They have sand mines where you can find fossils and shark teeth. Does anyone have any information on this, possibly a location?

Hi, I'm close to Washington D.C. and am heading to the Potomac sometime this month for a fossil hunting trip. Been obsessed with fossils for a while, and I'm also wondering as to where I can find fossils in the Nanjemoy formation. Cheers!

Does anyone know? I hear there's many fossils there. On all of the maps, though, there's no name for the creek. I know it's random, but I just want to try hunting there with a friend. Thanks! ~RiseOfTheExtinct

Dear fellow forum goers, These past few weeks have been quite busy, but that has not stopped me from going on the occasional fossil excursion. A few trips went by since my last posting and I decided to let some trips accumulate before posting again. On these trips I interacted with forum members @Woopaul5 and @frankh8147. The most recent trip was today, 08/12/18, and was somewhat productive. Frank found what we believe to be a part of a mosasaur brain case, which will surely be in his "finds of the year list". I was not as luck but ended up scoring a small point fragment and a jaw section of some fish. There were also some nice quality teeth that I found today. Other than this trip, I scored some nice finds on a few other trips throughout the two months. I hope you enjoy the finds, as I enjoyed finding them, and have a nice day. Since I've moved into my current house I have found all kinds of things on my property while collecting rocks to make a stone path through my woods. I have found old farm equipment parts, tools, and old glass bottles, and some interesting looking rocks. Hopefully I can get some things identified!

I was on the way to another area when I spotted some odd rock formations in the Pine Canyon area (Tooele Co. Utah). I may go back and dig through the sandy deposits near the rocks, but I didn’t want to waste my time if these are just sandy deposits void of fossils. So I wanted to get some input on them before I go back and dig under the hot August sun. Are these kinds of rocks typically found near fossils? The rock with the shell casing looks to have held a shell, but what if it’s a rock casing that is shaped like a shell? The 3rd picture is the bottom portion of the shell rock and the 4th picture is the bottom side of the sandy rock w/ calcium cabonate staining.

I'm trying to get an accurate id on my worm rocks that I found in a fossilized mud formation. The second rock picture is the back side of one of the worm rocks. The 3rd picture is a colorful rock found nearby. I wondered if ancient algae stained the rocks, or if someone has another explanation for the colors on the rock? All the rocks were found in the Oquirrh mountains (Ut).

I have a few different fossils I was hoping to get some help identifying. I’m brand new to collecting/hunting for fossils. If any other pictures are needed I’ll try to get the best ones possible!! These first teeth I found in Naples, Florida. I came across them by a river there. The second set of pictures is from the Montour Preserve in Danville, Pa.

I have been here at the forums for quite sometime now ( I think since I found my first fossils on a trip to Missouri close to 20 years ago?!) Work and life has been very busy and had prevented me from anything more than online hunting, you tube video's, and the lack of actual sites close to where I currently live. (Currently I live above the San Joaquin Valley, in a small mountain community named North Fork. I have had wonderful years here hunting arrow heads and various rocks and minerals, Have found many crystals at the old gold mine sites which are numerous over in Mariposa county next to me, and have had a great time up here! However, I took a trip to Missouri many moons ago to help a family member relocate out here to Nevada, which is when the unexpected happened. When we went to rent the moving truck to begin loading, my mom went inside to handle the rental, and as per my "norm" I took off walking across an open fields with, eyes to the ground,, towards the back of the lot and behind the row of trucks parked ready for rent, towards the railroad tracks. I was finding different minerals and such and then by chance I kicked over a plain down rudy clay looking rock, when I noticed it had a pattern to it. I looked closer and it was a plant fossil ! I was ecstatic, and thrilled does not even begin to cover it. I found several more all of different varieties when I began to notice what the 'commonalities' were with the ones I was finding. From that point on I was hooked! I made several trips back there just for the rock hunting and had found many wonderful 'treasures' which I cherished. I then began to explore more of Missouri to see what else there was to find in this state, and lets put it this way, the first thing on my bucket list is to return to Missouri!!! It got even better, after having my eyes opened so to speak as when we left there we headed to a ranch to spend the night that was owned by family back there. They have an 80 acre ranch. When we got there and I stepped out of the truck, I looked down and could NOT believe my eyes. There were fossils just laying around and exposed all up and down the dirt road which lead from the highway and into the 80 acres. I hunted for the rest of that evening and found more treasures. I have never forgotten that trip, and like I said I plan on gong back there one day before I die, and attempt to find more of those little treasures which made so darned happy so many years ago....and the family back there still owns the ranch too! I have since retired due to disability (heart) and find I have more time available than money naturally, so I am here to begin exploring what is available or close by where I live now, and also any near Fernley NV.. where I spend several months at at time there helping my Mom. I have small amounts of silver in quartz rock, (no gold yet though) many heads, awesome crystals, but my real desire is to find more fossils! So if anyone has any information or recommendations for me I would love to know about them! I am aware of the fossils found down in the Valley at the old landfill dump site in Madera, (wooly mammoth bones, sabre tooth tiger etc.) and I have heard of a dry creek bed somewhere down around the town of Dos Palos and of course Shark Hill and the Ernst Quarries and Ant Hill which is now closed. However its a vast area there, with miles and miles of open high desert area, which leads me to hope that those are not the ONLY areas where one can hunt for sharks teeth and other sea life fossils. Hey everyone, This is my second post hopefully I can get some answers on these! I found these in a town called Tunkhannock in Northeastern Pennsylvania in part of a mountainous area. They were just in some shale I was breaking up. Any kind of research I’ve done says there’s really not much for fossils in that area. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance friends! 1 2 3

Today I stopped at the Gainesville Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida so my wife could see the Rainforest Butterfly Exhibit and walk among the butterflies. Well after doing that, I did what any good FF Member would do, I took a ton of pictures of their Fossil exhibits. It is a very nice museum and it is free, with the exception of special exhibits like the Butterflies. For your viewin pleasure, her are the pics- it will take a couple posts.

Hello Everyone, Since I am away from my usual haunts and fossil hunts and currently on the left coast ... we decided (ok, I insisted like a small excited child) that we take our annual trip to Ed's House of Gems on Sandy Blvd. in Portland, Oregon. Since meeting my wife's folks and seeing her old stomping grounds as a child ... her family's frequent visits to this old dive bar of a rock shop was one of the extra bonuses that sealed the deal and now we have two kids. haha. Ok, so Ed's is a family run business and has been around at least as long as we have .. 40 + years. It is a building tucked a bit away from a street filled with mariner themed dive bars, Chinese restaurants, and establishments of ill repute (?) Ok, it's Portland so they have a bikini drive through coffee hut nearby as well..... Keeping it weird. The storefront has probably not changed over the decades so it borders on the kitsch .. which honestly is back in style now. It's just a fantastic trip down memory lane when 'my' family used to pile into a car for two weeks and drive across the desert Southwest (with one tape player between 3 kids) . These rock shops it seemed were dotted along the highway and we were screaming bloody murder anytime we spotted one, because my dad (I know) secretly wanted to stop at all of them as well. Piled in big metal caged bins were boulders of obsidian or agate, petrified wood, and rose quartz ... buy it by the pound. We usually left with our little trinkets and mineral treats. Always loved those stops, and they are a disappearing breed with online taking over and shuttering the brick and mortar locations. I think the other rock shop here in Oregon that is worth a look is a little place on the way to Bend, OR but I digress. Anyhoo .. inside the store is filled with everything a rockhound would want. Minerals in the rough, slabs, tools, tumblers, mineral specimens, Moroccan fakes, Moroccan real, Riker mounts, shells, fossils etc ..... I love every inch of that rock infested place .. and now it is a new tradition for the next generation. I hope it sticks around for a few more ......

Hi, I'm concerned that these four trilobites may be fakes. I bought them a long time ago by a guy, who claimed they were genuine. Some of them, especially the Psychopyge, almost looks too good to be real. But I wanna know what other people think. Thanks.

I created this topic for anyone who wants an opinion from others on a potential purchase. Not regarding if the price right, because that’s totally up to you...I’m more concerned about quality, rarity, etc. Post here if you’re on the fence about anything. To kick it off, I’m gonna share what I came across....I’m not sure on the availability on such things like dino eggs meaning, “do I wait or purchase?” I know there are fakes, and I know the quality comes in all ranges...the detail in this particular shell is interesting.... question is, would you hold off and wait for something better, or would you purchase this bit of shell? Not crazy expensive anyway. A magnified Titanosaur argentinosaurus eggshell x4. I sent the seller more specific questions.

I have four ammonites that I cannot identify, and I hope you guys can help I got no information on their age or where they were found.

I just bought a rock house and several of the rocks have these fossils. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I know very little about fossils. They are 3"-4" across and raised about 1/4"-1/2"

Hello. My son and I are heading to South Carolina to Summerville area and Folly Beach area to search for Shark Teeth. This is a big trip from California for 4 full days and we hope to find some great fossils. This is August 4th-7th. We are doing an excursion on the 4th. But for the next day or two it is quite hard to figure which creeks/rivers are OK to go to which will give us some luck. Any insights? Checked the forums but it has been hard to find exactly where to go. On the last day we head to Folly beach to see what is there. Any insight on what section to start with? I have been following the tide charts. Thank you!

Hello all, I am currently on Holiday in Greece and then on the islands Zakynthos and Kefalonia. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are things to find here. I searched on the internet but only found that there are some fossils on the top of the highest mountain in Kefalonia. But that is closed at this time in summer to prevent forest fires. Anyone else knows any locations?

Hello Everyone. I have recently returned from some fossil collecting trips and have many Australian invertebrate fossils to trade. I have a large collection of sea urchins, gastropod, bryozoa and other marine invertebrates to trade. The Victorian fossils I have to trade are Miocene to Pliocene and the New South Wales fossils are Devonian and Permian. I would like in return vertebrate fossils. ( Sharks teeth, fish and shark vertebra, mammal bone, etc.) I am also happy to trade overseas. Thanks, Daniel
