  1. do you guys know any fossil sites in Michigan, I live in the lansing area and places like rockport state park are a bit far. Do you guys know any places closer that I could go to look for a high quantity of fossils and I wouldn't have to drive very far?

    What's this reddish-purplish coloration?

In one very particular site of mine on the peace river, I noticed that some of the fossils have this coloration. Here is a pretty good example on a mammoth tooth I've found. It seems that the fossils vary, but every now and again I get this mineral on the fossils. What is this? What causes it? I'm sure it's probably pretty common and I really should know this, as I'm studying geology at the University of Florida. But, hey, you guys have a collective fossil and mineral knowledge of an ancient god. Put this mystery to bed for me please.

    Any clue what this is?

I've found this one as all of my fossils in marlstone quarry in Popovac. It looks strange , i've never found something like this before. Help would be nice!
  4. My girlfriend is wine tasting her way through Italy for a few weeks. Tough gig huh? Anyways, today she’s in Tuscany and the winery she was at had a display and story of how the soil was very fossiliferous. No listing of geological age and the server there didn’t know much more either. She wasn’t sure which area of Tuscany she was in and the geologic maps I looked up seemed to run anywhere from upper cretaceous on. She managed to talk them out of one of their display pieces for me, with a fairly good sized wine order no doubt! She only sent this one photo, and they packed it with her wine to ship, so I don’t have a lot to go by until I have it in hand. It’s an interesting rock and kind of has the look of some Schist like formations I’ve seen her in the states. I can kind of imagine possible shell imprints in a few places but not sure. Or could the whole piece be fossil? Not sure. Any guesses or illumination would be appreciated. Thanks!
  5. Hi all, I hope you don't mind but I want to piggy back some questions off of a couple of other posts I've seen recently about transporting and buying fossils legally and going through customs. To make it simple, my husband is US military and we are stationed in England. I've bought several fossils while here and discovered a few (very minor ones, so far) on my own. After seeing a few posts, I'm beginning to get a little concerned that I may not be able to take them back with me, or to another overseas location. I want to keep collecting but I'm hesitant if I can't bring them with me. If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows a good answer, I'd love to hear about it. Thank you! (And sorry if it's already been covered before)

    ID HELP PLEASE

Sending a new fossil I found in Southeaster US, SC Summerville area. Found in a creek that had many different formations in it. Im still learning them but looks possibly like plant life fossil. Not sure what but looking sideways I can see the distinction between the rock portion and what I am trying to identify. Any help would be great! Side angle.
  7. Hello! I have many pieces of fossilized fish elements, mostly skull elements and i have found them yesterday at Popovac Marl stone mine. They're 14m years old.I would love to trade them for all other kinds of fossils If anybody is interested in this, send me PM ! Regards
  8. HI all, we are doing some research on gastropods in the permian, and have not had much luck finding this very important reference on line. Can any one point us in the right direction? Maybe you have a PDF? Supal Formation (Permian) of Eastern Arizona. Geological Society of America Memoir 89. Stephen S. Winters. Geological Society of America, New York, 1963. viii + 99 pp. Illus
  9. Hi! I'm looking if anybody wants to trade mosasaurus or croc, gator teeth with me! I'm offering Miocene lake shells and plant parts which i've found in Marl stone mine in Popovac, they're 14m years old.If anybody is interested let me know
  10. Hey there! I'm sorry its been so long since I've posted on here but suffice it to say I need your help. I'm planning a six to seven day fossil hunting trip in Pennsylvania (sometime in mid august) and I need your help verifying that the sites I've picked to visit from Robert Beards guide Rock Hounding Pennsylvania are still accessible to collecting as well as coverable given my time frame. The places I'm looking at hunting are sites 27. Beltzville State Park (Outcrops on shoreline), 28. Lehighton, Lehigh Canal (Former borrow pit and outcrop),30. Deer Lake (Borrow Pit), 33. Suedberg (Outcrop in former borrow pit), 35. Centralia (Former strip mine outcrop), 38. Rockville (Former quarry), 48. Walker Lake (Hillside and unpaved road), 51. PPL Montour Preserve (Hillside, Former borrow pit), 57. Uniontown (Former quarry). Any insights as to whether or not theses sites are still accessible to collecting, weather our not you believe covering all these sites within 6 to 7 days is possible, and any other tips and tidbits of information on the sites, and or planning a large trip like this etc, would be greatly appreciated! When I go I'm planning to take notes and pictures and then, when i get back, write a few essays illustrated with pics that I will post on here! Thank you in advance, Glenn aka Fossil123
  11. The girlfriend and I had a blast down in Madison and we will definitely be going back! Here's my collection that I found. The one shell has a hole in it but I'm a good way! It has little crystals on the inside!
