Hardly anybody ever talks about the Cambrian fossils of the southern midcontinent (USA). They're super-underappreciated. Show us what you've got! Here's one to start us off: Thorax and pygidium of a trilobite, possibly Orygmaspis, typically referred to as "Orygmaspis cf. Orygmaspis llanoensis" but probably a different species altogether. Note the two pairs of macropleural spines marking the final thoracic segments. Davis Formation (late Cambrian: Furongian), south side of Highway 8, St. François County, Missouri.

"How Fossil Community Got Lost—and How We Get It Back": Request for feedback
pefty posted a topic in Questions & Answers
As promised, your #ThePaleoCommunityOrganizer update for March 31. (See previous thread here.) After a 12-year(!) hiatus, the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) has finally rebooted American Paleontologist, the old avocational paleontology standby, as a community newsletter. To do what I can to support this effort, I've signed on as a columnist, with a column called The PaleoCommunity Organizer. It centers the community aspect of our shared avocation and looks at all the ways in which acting as a community can inspire and save avocational paleontology and help it thrive in the 21st century. And, well, it wouldn't be much of a column about community if it were just me talking. A crucial aspect is hearing from y'all, whether that means calling me out on something I missed, or naming a powerful example of something I only just touched on, or reframing the conversation as you see it. The community always knows more than I do. So, community, bring your feedback here to The Fossil Forum, where we can build on each other's ideas and craft a better avocational paleontology world for all of us. Action item for you: In the comments below, I'd love to hear your feedback on the first PaleoCommunity Organizer column, which starts on page 10 of this first issue of the American Paleontologist newsletter. This first installment of the column is called How Fossil Community Got Lost—and How We Get It Back, Part I. So, where to find this first issue, hot off the virtual presses? Right here: https://www.priweb.org/research-and-collections/american-paleontologist My thanks again. You can continue to find links to all these Fossil Forum discussions of PaleoCommunity Organizer columns at the following homepage for The PaleoCommunity Organizer: https://www.priweb.org/research-and-collections/american-paleontologist/pco- 8 replies

The PaleoCommunity Organizer: Intro post and request for near-future feedback

News flash and request for near-future feedback! After a 12-year(!) hiatus, the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) is about to reboot American Paleontologist, the old avocational paleontology standby, as a community newsletter. It centers the community aspect of our shared avocation and looks at all the ways in which acting as a community can inspire and save avocational paleontology and help it thrive in the 21st century. The community always knows more than I do. So, community, bring your feedback here to The Fossil Forum, where we can build on each other's ideas and craft a better avocational paleontology world for all of us. Action item: Look out for a followup post here on March 31, 2024, when American Paleontologist's first newsletter drops. That's when I'll ask y'all to get the discussion rolling on my column's first entry: "How Fossil Community Got Lost—and How We Get It Back." Stay tuned.- 4 replies

I recently came across this specimen in a chalk cliff in Normandy, France, near the town of Livarot. I was wondering if anyone could advise me what it might be? Fish, or shell, or something else? In advance, thanks.

Can somebody help to ID this fossil? it comes from shallow marin miocene deposits is it a coral or a bryozoan?
-
Does anyone know what this is? I found it in Rhode Island, on the outskirts of the Narragansett basin. It looks symmetrical and segmented. I think it’s an invertebrate fossil, but I really have no idea. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Possible Diplopoda-3.tiffHello all, I’m hoping someone could lend their eyes and give their opinion on something I found. This is from a small rock I found near the Narragansett Basin area of Rhode Island. I recovered it from an undeveloped plot of commercial land that is sometimes used as a construction fill dump, so I don’t know where it originally came from. It appears to have a symmetrical pattern, but I could be seeing what I want to see. Rhode Island fossils are from the Pennsylvanian Period (mostly ferns, horsetails, some trilobites and occasional insects). If anyone could shed some light on this I’d be very appreciative!

This is from a visit to Whitewater Gorge in July. I don't know exactly what it is, so any help would be appreciated. I am not very familiar with the Whitewater, so I used basic ID that I could find, but I don't know what to say about this. I thought it was a brachiopod at first but I'm not so sure of that now. Pictures may not be the best quality. Dimensions of fossil: Approx. 1.2cm long by 1.3cm wide
