  1. I had tossed all these together in my garage storage and just noticed, while I was looking for auction material, that they were not all Equus astragalus. Given their condition, can ID's for the bottom 3 be determined? I'm assuming Harry, @Harry Pristis, would be my best shot. I appreciate it!

    Peace river finds

Hello, I have these three fossils which I believe to be two pieces of vertebrae (one may be a piece of bone) and then a tooth of some sort. Found in the peace river, Florida. Thanks (I can also upload some closer photos if needed)
  3. Terminal Stareasaurus

    Tooth or claw?

Found this in the Peace River here in Wauchula Florida. I can't seem to figure out if it's a tooth or a claw. Thanks in advance.

    Bone Found in Peace River

Hello, I recently found this particular bone in the Peace River. Is this just a large chunk of bone, or could it be something else? I thought it could possibly be a fragment of a sloth claw core, but again I'm assuming it is just normal bone until I can get more information. Any help in identifying it would be appreciated!
  5. Found this in the local health food store today. Wonder if this is what is meant by “honey hole”!
  6. I think these are fish teeth. Can that be confirmed and can any of them be identified further? Happy to provide additional view of any, if that would help. Grid lines are 1mm spaced. • Is T11 Chondrichthyan? • Could T12 actually be a stingray dermal denticle?

    Is this a dasyatid tooth?

Is this a dasyatid tooth? It seems different from the others I'm finding in this micro matrix. Grid lines 1mm spaced.
  8. Here's a drum fish tooth lodged in a curiously shaped piece of host matrix. Smooth, cylindrical with a potential spiral groove. What do y'all think? Grid lines are 1mm spaced.
  9. In 2lbs of Peace River micro matrix, I found 415 shark teeth, of which 90 seem potentially identifiable. Here they are in different categories. Grid lines are spaced 1mm apart. I can get additional views of any teeth as warranted. A: Based on my experience with larger teeth, would call A1 as hammerhead. A2-A5 share many shape characteristics, but are they Rhizoprionodon? B1-B14 Carcharhinus, I believe. C1-C21 seem like lemon, Negaprion. D1, D2: posterior Galeocerdo tiger shark? E1-E5: These may all just be mostly-root fragments of Carcharhinus, and reflect a common pattern of breakage? But they were a "type" that emerged in the sorting. F1, F2: Snaggletooth G: This group contains a very common morphology I found, a blade with a single cusplet on the posterior side of the tooth. Most have roots that look broken. So maybe we're dealing with a lot of Carcharhinus that all broke in a similar way? Most of the blades show little or no sign of serrations, but maybe that's weathering (or juvenile teeth?). I am pretty unsure about these. G8 and G9 seem somewhat sand tiger like. Are many of these G teeth Rhizoprionodon? H: the odd singleton teeth. Some of these may be too weathered to ID. H1, H6 have similarities to some thresher teeth I have found. H2 seems potentially sympheseal H3 contortus? H7,8,9? lemon? too weathered to ID? H4 interesting cusplets, but I have little sense of ID H5 seems like it could be a sand tiger H10 lemon? H11 Carcharhinus with no serrations on the blade? H12 interesting, but ?? H13 interesting, but ?? H14 sand tiger? H15 thresher? H16 interesting, but ?? And for the sake of completeness, here are all the teeth I deemed not worth trying to ID: If you see anything worth closer inspection in there, I'll grab photos:

    Peace River vertebrae ID help

Here are a few pieces of Peace River Florida fossils that were included in some Shark teeth I bought online, one I thing is a Tilly bone? And the small vert is it fish or snake?

    Peace River Unknowns

Been working the the Peace pretty hard this year and have some unknowns I'm trying to figure out. I'm about 3 years into this hobby and learning but can use all the help I can get. Thanks in advance!
  12. In two lbs of Peace River micro matrix, I identified these 8 items as fish vertebrae (+1 discovered in the "coral" pile). Grid lines are 1mm apart. Are the bottom and right pieces on the lower row eroded shark (or ray) verts? I also sorted the item below into the vert pile, but upon photographing it, I became less sure. Instead of having a half-round profile when viewed end on, it was more linear, like a cannoli shell. Unfortunately, it popped out of my forceps before I could take photos of other orientations, and now it's lost forever. But on the off chance these two photos are enough for an ID, here you go:
  13. Are these solitary corals? Grid lines are 1mm.
  14. Hi all! I’m looking for some help identifying the specific animal this tooth came from. I know it’s camelid but that’s about it. Measurements are in last images. Let me know if you need more. Thanks!
  15. [edit: TLDR: DD1-DD13 are denticles. Everything else is likely not.] Here are the candidate shark dermal denticles from my Peace River micro matrix sort (grid lines are 1mm): • DD1-DD13: quite certain in the ID, but can the species be identified? • DD14-DD19: Less confident about these more idiosyncratic specimens. DD16 might just be very worn, or possibly just a lookalike piece of phosphate. might DD17 be a steinkern? Its ridges seem shaped like the other denticles, but the material appears different. Additional idiosyncratic specimens, two orientations each. I am uncertain if they are denticles: • DD20 seems to have ridges, but texture is rough • DD24 has a promising profile, but ridges aren't obvious • DD23 has a rough "base," visible in the lower shot, and overall conical form. What do y'all think?

    Peace River modern vertebra

Went hunting today. One broken Meg, One broken Mako but some interesting finds. I pick up lots of things that trigger my curiosity, like a coprolite or modern catfish barb, or even enamel fragments that have patterns that I try to identify. There are some rocks in this photo, but don't get confused. At 3 o'clock is piece of tusk, and 4 o'clock has 2 pieces of fossilized wood. Dolphin vert, a couple of dolphin bulla, a couple of processes from Baleen whale petrosal. Just goes to show, sometimes I do pick up fossils. I am interested in that likely modern bone at 7 pm... Here are some more photos. Those breaks look clean, like from a butcher's saw. Possibly, I'll learn to recognize this next time I see it.

    ID help please, Peace River

Crown measures 10.7mm. The small size confuses me. Is it possibly from a baby? I’ve researched but am just getting more confused. I know it’s a brachydont but that’s as far as I’m getting. Baby pig? Baby bear? Opossum? I found it in someone’s discard pile! I haven’t found a tooth like this yet and am excited to have found it in the jaw thanks in advance! @Meganeura @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis
  18. Where the heck is Nocatee?! Greetings from a small town about 10 minutes south of Arcadia. I have been kind of messing around fossil hunting on the Peace river for a couple of years now and have decided to get serious since I am addicted. We have about 1100 acres of land on the river that includes about three miles of the river. We have ag land for cows as well as land for hunting. We even put our own ramp in to the river! I look forward to learning from all of you and will be on the river later today!
  19. Got this out of the Peace River and any help Identifying would be appreciated.

    Peace River Florida

Found the fingernail looking guys in the peace river - someone guessed they might be pieces of parrot fish beaks - any guessed are appreciated.
  21. Just want to share some recent finds from hunting a site given to me by a new friend from this forum. The whole reason for the post is to share the coolest patho tiger shark tooth I’ve ever found…but adding some others finds just for fun. In total, I found 500 shark teeth and 35 meg frags in one day. I don’t usually count them but there were so many that it seemed almost necessary this trip I didn’t find any whole kegs but the posterior one posted above is pretty close to being whole. Here are some of my favorite teeth from the day: I have found a lot of ivory pieces in the past but this chunk of tusk tip is a favorite find as well: (photos do not do it justice) Also found a few beat-up whale tooth chunks, best one pictured below: Biggest sting ray denticle I’ve found and some other smaller ones: Homlesina and glyptodon scutes: Partial tapir jaw with tooth roots: Ray denticles, fish scales, mouth plates: Ear bones (I think), dugong tooth, and my friend’s first ever Meg frags (she was SO excited)

    Peace River 3-toed horse ID

Found this horse tooth today, and while the protocone isn’t isolated, it’s got a hypoconal fossette and has a very low plication count (Simple enamel pattern) - which, according to Hulbert’s book, makes it protohippatine - either Protohipparion or Calippus. I’m leaning Calippus but only because there’s not many Protohipparion species or dentitions to compare to in the book. Measures 23.7mm x 19.5mm. @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis @fossillarry

    Having Trouble with this ID

Another find from earlier this week that I can't seem to nail down an ID for. When I first pulled it out of the Peace River I thought it was a distal or medial phalanx. It is very small and I just dropped it into my pouch and continued hunting. Once I got home and sorted through the day's finds I still thought some type of toe bone and started my search with that in mind. After several hours I came across an image of a larger fossil bone that looked like a match. It was a patella. I realized that patella was a much more likely ID. My problem now is - what species would have a patella so small. Tapir is too big. I started thinking bobcat? raccoon? Haven't been able to find measurements to allow me to zero in on what this bone belongs to. So, I am turning to the group for help. Measurements: 20mm x 15mm x 14mm or 7/8" x 5/8" x 1/2" (the ruler in the photos is metric) Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  24. Found this tooth in my micro mix - it’s about 1-1.5mm long. Has a cusp. Is unbroken (Except maybe missing a cusp on the other side??) but looks like symphyseal lemon shark teeth roots I’ve seen… got no idea! @Al Dente @hemipristis @MarcoSr

    Tooth Split Repair

I've got a small horse tooth from the Peace River near Wachula. It's got a big split down the middle and seems to be only getting worse. I submerged it in an unknown higher concentrate of paraloid-b72. Do you guys reckon that will be enough to halt the split? It was a deep split nearly separating it in half. I submerged the tooth for a few minutes in solution to completely saturate the tooth.
