Fossil identification help please! Peace River Formation Venice, FL area
Newbie77 posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello fellow paleontology buffs! I have recently returned from a trip to the Venice area where I did some surface/ beach sifting for fossils. I need to get out and dive there next time. I would love to have some help identifying fossils that are tripping me up. I recognize that there are a LOT of them. Sorry!!! I organized them on to a PDF because there were a lot to look at, but please let me know if it does not open up and I will upload them as images instead. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.- 44 replies

Hi all, we found these at the beach and I cant find anything comparable in my book. Hoping someone with more experience could have a look. I think the little one could possibly be an incisor and i havent a clue about the larger one. I guess if anything its a decent looking rock. The scale bar is 1cm squared. Looking forward to any feedback

I recently found this partial tooth in Florida and I really think it’s dire wolf. It looks exactly like the upper carnassial dire wolf teeth online. The only measurement i have is that the thickest part of the enamel from top to bottom is 17mm thick, not accounting for wear. Can you guys confirm/deny? Thanks! filtered-3F76D20A-199B-4B93-8957-ACB17287FC39.mp4

Ok, I'm finally got the chance to post these finds from about 3 weeks ago. So, three weeks ago we took a dive trip down in Venice, left Saturday, and came back after the dive Sunday, anyway it took a over a week to get everything cleaned off. Here's the finds. and as I was going through my Camara roll I realized that I forgot to take a picture of the clean finds before I put them away. My brains been scrambled up. Thanks for reading anyway, hope you enjoyed.

Hi Everyone! My wife asked me if her finds look like anything. Being ignorant, I told her I’d post them and see what the Experts say. Here’s #1: Here’s #2:

Hi again, everyone. Being the unashamed newbie that I am, I have some beach finds from around Venice, Florida that may be PORs (Plain Ol’ Rocks) or fossilized thingies. ‘Look familiar to anyone?

Hi, we found the longer one (on left) in February and the other two a few weeks ago in Venice. I haven’t found these before and cant find comparables. We dont go to the west coast often so hoping someone might be able to clarify what these are. Im thinking the small square-ish one (on right) may be a small part of a tooth but definitely not sure. The scale bar is 1cmx1cm. Thanks

Hey guys! I had a phenomenal day diving for teeth last weekend in Venice. I found around 1,500 teeth and some other awesome stuff. Here is a pile of broken/not "high" quality small teeth that i found Here is the pile of teeth that are full and/or super high quality. Here are the tigers that I found. I don't usually find a lot of tiger shark teeth so it was nice finding this many and of this size! Here are all of the Makos that I found. The one in the middle is my biggest Mako at 2.3" and I also found some super pretty smaller ones! Here are all of the Megs that I found. I found my biggest Meg at 4.75" and I couldn't be happier!!! The smaller Megs have a lot of super nice colors and I am super happy that I found them. And the find of the day would be my FIRST GREAT WHITE!! I have been looking for my first GW for over a year now and I finally found it. I think you would have been able to hear me on the surface because of how much I was freaking out when I found it. What I do not have pictured is I found my largest alligator tooth measuring in just under 1" and I also found my first Gar scale (I think thats what it is). I found four pathological teeth. Two of them were bull shark teeth that had double tips. The double tips were very small and I couldn't get a good picture of them. One was a bull shark tooth that had waves in the blade. The last one was a lemon shark that has a twisted blade. If their are any specific teeth you want better pictures of or you have any questions just let me know! This was definitely a trip for the books and I cant wait to get out there again.

Hello all, my name is Jonah. For Spring break I am going to be near Venice, Florida for a little over a week. I'm posting this to see if anyone would like to hunt fossils in the Arcadia area, or Venice/Caspersan. I have experience in the Peace River and diving Venice. If anyone would like to perhaps join or trade information please pm me. I may be stopping in the panhandle to visit an old friend and hunt there as well. So I'll be equipped with gear for both consolidated and non materials. Perhaps meeting a stranger to share a mutual interest is strange, but heck the hard part was convincing my girlfriend, so here goes Here is where my girlfriend and I will be staying, however we will be traveling over to the Peace River in multiple localities. I also brought a two man dingy for some extra mileage in the river. I also have two shovels not pictured. Some small finds from both Arcadia and Sarasota.

Hello everyone! I headed down to Venice, Florida to go diving for the day. We ended up doing really good and it was definitely worth the trip. We did three dives and i ended up with a good amount of megs/makos/himis, a few hundred small teeth, a piece of mammoth tooth, two whale ears, a whale vert, and an alligator scoot . I also got a piece of tusk that is about 3" diameter and 12" long. It is not pictured here because it is super fragile and some has already fallen off. It's currently soaking in fresh water and once it is done I will update with some photos. The largest meg is measuring in at just over 4.5" and it one of the highest quality ones that I have found to date. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to see better photos of!!

Hi there! Recently looking at some fossils I found land hunting in South Venice and this one had me stumped. Granted I'm no expert, I tried to ID it from the web and couldn't come up with anything. It does have one ridge area like some other mammal teeth. Just an odd fossil to me. Thanks!

I’m a native of Florida having grown up looking for fossils and teeth on Venice island. The army took me to Tx. I served as a combat medic for 41st FA, 1stCAV, 2-8 infantry. One tour in Afghanistan. Currently in texas, near cibolo creek and boerne. I take my kids with me and have often wondered what can be found where? Fossils and minerals in our area in texas. Also, growing up in FL I can spot a tooth about anywhere. I have some great fossils I would love A PID on. I believe a turtle scoot, ray barb and mouth pieces, and several small and chunks of bones. I am super excited to share and get to know my area through the collective knowledge on this site. Thank you ahead of time!
