Found This on Beach, San Pedro California: What is it and how old is it?
History Hunter posted a topic in Fossil ID
I’m grateful to have found this forum, and am new to this hobby. My son and I have dug shark teeth and trilobites, but we found this near Long Beach CA on the shore at San Pedro. Any ideas of what it is, and how old it is? I first thought it was a whale vertebrae column, but now I’m not so sure. It measures APPROXIMATELY 20 inches in overall diameter. Also, I’m we are collectors and not interested in selling it, but it’d be cool to know if we found a valuable treasure or not (it is to us), so if anybody has an idea of actual monetary value, I’d love to know. Thanks in advance!- 16 replies

Any advice to extract a fossilized vertebra that is under 6mm?
The_Wanderer posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Do y’all have any advice y’all could give me to extract a fossilized vertebrae bone that is under 6mm without damaging? like tools, extraction techniques, preservation of it, and identification of it. context: So, I am new at this and I don’t really know what to get or do to extract it. The fossil is small like very small around as small as fire ants, like maybe on the bigger side of fire ants. I don’t have any close up and clear photos of it right now, but the measurements is accurate, and I will add a quick sketch of what it roughly looks like. -
Hello all, I posted a tooth yesterday that you kindly identified for me, and I have a few more fossils that I found that I would really appreciate an identification on. All found on Zandmotor beach, The Netherlands. There are four specimens: 1 A bone with a hole in the middle, seems like a vertebrae(??). Any idea what fragment it really is and maybe what kind of animal it came from? Length: 2.5 cm 2 A bone that I would also like any information about, although it might be really hard to identify. - 4 cm 3 Small, flatter bone. - 4.5 cm 4 Are these petrified wood by any chance? They do feel like a rock and also sound like such when I gently hit them with another rock. There are 3 pieces in total that I have shared. - around 6 cm.

Hi guys my names Conley. My kids and I live in SE Colorado and have been digging and finding sharks teeth and various other fossils. Since we started looking 4 years ago we have found 300 teeth in a 1 acre spot. Some of the other fossils we have found we are not real sure what they have came from.

I believe this is also part of a Mosasaur, but unlike the 100 other vertebrae I have, this one is concave on both ends. All of the other are convex on one end and concave on the other. It does not appear to have been broken off on either end. The piece appears agatized all over which would suggest that it was not broken )at least to me) If this is from a mosasaur, is it a vertebrae, or some other part of the animal?

I believe these to be fish vertebrae, they were found on the north sulphur river near Ladonia, TX at various times. I'm curious if anyone may have a thought about what type of fish these might have belonged to, (I know that is a stretch) and if in fact they are fish vertebrae? Also I have several chunks of these like the piece on the right. I'm not sure what the substance is that they are matrixed in. I'm curious does anyone know what the concretion is made of, and is there a way to remove it without damaging the underlying fossil? Thanks again for your time.

I'm fairly certain this is a mosasaur vertebrae. Found on the north Sulphur River near Ladonia, TX. Like most items found there, there is some damage caused by tumbling down stream.

Hello, all. I browsing online on online auction site and came across these “Mosasaur vertebrae.” They are in a set, and are fairly expensive to me, as I only get pocket money. I was clarifying to see as to whether they are real. They have been around a bit, so I am not sure as to whether that is a bad sign or not. I can upload more images if needed.

About 3 months ago I bought an Ichthyosaur vertebrae, and I was wondering as to whether it is real or just a strangely shaped rock. I did notice there are things that appear to be stones in the side of it, but I think that is remaining sediment. I’ll try and get more photos if this image is not clear enough.

Hello Recently, I saw a theropod dorsal vertebra from the Morrison FM for sale, labeled as Allosaurus. I know there are many large theropod there. What objective evidence is this call based on? I rarely see bone materials from theropod other than Allosaurus. Thank you.

Hi everybody, Today I bring you pictures of what is allegedly a Pachy tail vertebrae with intact processes. I studied what has been found from Pachycephalosaurus and I'm struggling to place this bone along the tail, which is what the seller is claiming. I don't see where the processes are swept back like this one is. Could this be a different dinosaur? The same seller also has a Pachycephalosaurus rib which I'm also trying to figure out how to ID. Any help is appreciated.

Found in an area overlooking the Little Missouri River basin, Clark County , Arkansas. I have found mosasaurus vertebrae, ball and socket in the general area where I found this one. My confusion is the intervertebral socket. Also, the overall shape is not round but flatter and with a figure 8 shape. Please comment and if possible, what is it.

Hi there. I found this on a field trip to a private quarry in Midlothian , TX (just south of Dallas). It was in limestone / shale in the ATCO formation, where there’s lots of shark teeth and fish bones. I’m pretty sure it’s been compressed as most of the shark spines I’ve seen are much more round and this is pretty oval shaped. Does anyone have any guesses as to species? Thanks in advance!

Found in the badlands of Alberta. I put it in my hand to show you the size. If anyone has any idea it would be greatly appreciated. To me it looks like a tail vertebrae but not sure from what.

Utah - My 7 year old came home with this from a nearby field. It feels heavy like and hard like a rock. Some thoughts from medical professional family members is possible vertebrae or hoof from an animal. Any ideas for ID are appreciated. I'm not looking to sell, just trying to figure out what it is for my son. For now I'll let him think dino fossil until proven otherwise. Haha. I scanned it using photogrammetry and uploaded the 3D model to Nira for sharing images. https://myangelprints.nira.app/a/Mx7xVt3HQGmeJHJUiaeirA/1

Hi everyone! I have my eye on an interesting set of associated verts from the Cloverly formation of Carbon County, Montana. I have zero experience with this formation and was hoping for a second opinion on whether or not they are dino and if they can be IDed. The seller is leaning towards Tenontosaurus. What do you all think? (I know that the last couple verts have some resto, the seller was open about that). Any insight is appreciated as always!
