    Native American Artifact?

Ok so obviously this isn't a fossil but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I found this in South Harrison Township, NJ. I know artifacts are commonly found in the area and I think I finally got one. Can anyone ID this piece? Or at least confirm if it is indeed an artifact?
  2. *Update*I am a little slow sometimes but I noticed as I was photographing these just how similar they are! Well they look like a match to me, even the break in the shell seems to match... is this something really special? Like something to get checked at a museum? Especially if one half was used as an artifact? Sorry I have lots of questions. Okay so I found this shell a while ago and had forgotten about it until @tmaier said one of the oyster shells I had looked like it was possibly used as a mortar... Anyway! I found this again today (i had tossed it under the house) and I am so glad I did because when i cleaned off all the sand built up this is what it looks like! It is in way better shape than the other one... I really like this one. Can anyone ID?
  3. It was a beautiful day for a long North Sulphur River hike. Very few finds for such a long walk but it was good to get out of the house. It will be good hunting again after a heavy rain.
  4. I went to Sherman Texas Post Oak Creek for my second time today to hunt shark teeth. I found a nice variety of fossils and one killer Wilson artifact that is 7,000 - 9,000 yrs old.

    Dalton Artifact

  6. I hit 3 spots on NSR yesterday with a friend. We waded some waist deep water and mud but had a good day and some good finds. We found a nice variety of fossils from Pleistocene to Cretaceous. The killer Dalton artifact was the highlight of my day. The last pic is my friends finds for the day. Can anyone ID the large tooth on the bottom left of the last pic?
  7. Short and hot 2 hr hunt at the North Sulphur River Texas. I found a nice variety of items. Mosasaur Vert, Possible Fish Rib, Biface Preform Artifact, Mastodon Tooth Enamel. It was so hot the rocks were burning the soles of my feet through my dive boots lol.
  8. Slow day but nice variety. I finally found a shark tooth. Well most of one.
  9. I know this is a fossil site but i was hoping someone here may have came across something like this before and may have some info to pass on. i found this near fenton, mi near a old tree while tilling. It was a little over 20 inches deep. it is almost perfectly round very very smooth and heavy and extremely hard. When hit by my tiller it got no damage only damaged my tiller. The tiller left metalic marks on the stone. i have since used my different things to try to scratch it with no luck. everything i use just just damaged. the item weighs around 41.7 grams

    Please Help Me Id These!

Hi there - I've been living on the Outer Banks for a few years, and been visiting for 28 years and this week I found 3 of these "fossils". I have never come across anything like this here on the Outer Banks before. I am not sure if that's what these could be. Can anyone please help me to identify these three pieces? Thanks a lot!
  11. I was at one of my tooth hunting sites on a slower day and happened upon a broken bone buried in the muck. I see a lot of this and did not think twice. But, as I passed it I noticed a groove so I Kicked it over and noticed a matching groove on the other side. Of course this got my curiosity up, and noticed more detail upon cleaning it off. What are your thoughts???

    An Artifossil

several recent posts regarding artifacts & their identificaton prompted me to dig this specimen out of moth balls: it's both artifact & fossil; the tip section of a chipped stone spear or knifepoint, with a little surprise. The planispiral coiled gastropod preserved in the marine chert or flint probably contributed to it's fracture. It would have been a great artifact had it been complete;only now it's been relegated to "conversation piece". Hope you find it interesting.
  13. Howdy from Houston. I am a docent at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and am currently leading tours through our Fantastic new paleo hall. Because of their enthusiasm and questions I enjoy my younger tour member the most. Hearing a 4 year old say " Oh look over there. It's a stegosaurus!" really makes my day. I find that they like having things to handle and am looking for a couple of large (preferably fossil ) alligator gar scales to make a replica arrow with a gar scale point to bring out when discussing our alligator gar fossil. I am happy to buy or trade and also welcome suggestions about where to look to buy. I and my little future paleontologists thank you. I forgot to attach a picture of the shape I am looking for and that they should be at least an inch or so.

    Not Sure What These Are

Hey guys, I've got a couple of things here that I suspect are probably geofacts, but just wanted to see what others thought. Both of these items were found in the Mojave Desert, southern CA, near the NV border. The texture on this one was unusual, smooth but with slight ridges on one side; in a way it almost seems like bone (or maybe wood?) - but then the other side was rather flat... I picked up this one at first thinking it might have been an artifact (i.e. a stone biface). Smooth sedimentary rock with unusual dimensions. I've found several of similar shape in the area. I thought maybe mollusk shells had filled up with sediment, then worn away, leaving a cast. There does appear to be remains of a different type of mineral on the outside. Thanks! Zach
  15. Hey Guys, I know its a fossil forum but I feel native american artifacts go hand in hand so dont blow a fuse. I have found arrowheads here and there. not as many as I would like to admit. I dont know if I am looking in the wrong places or what. I know the basics, plowed feilds after a rain, creeks bed, ect. Are there any particular places I should be looking, any geological characteristics, bluffs, ect. Should i be looking in creeks or is that more of a waste of time than anything else. If i were to survery a certain area, how far should i dig while sifting the land. I want to know everything there is to know when it comes to native american finds in new jersey with maximum productivity. I would really appreciate any help, knowledge, and advice that would help me out. Also have a question in regard to tips. Is it possible that archaic and paleo indians may have made spears out of iron stone? I know that it is everywhere in Parts of new jersey but i have found a piece that seems to have been worked. it doesnt have conchoidal fractures since its not chert but it is pointed, it was not from a river bed, it was from a turned field, and it has definately been worked. thanks for the information!
  16. hello guys, I found these stones which look to be some sort of indian axe head possibly and some sort of tool that looks to have used for scraping hides possibly. Also i found these shark teeth and what look to be be some sort of tooth from a dolphin, or reptile. I am not sure and new to collecting. I also found this really cool piece of coal 3 feet beneath a sand bed which has a fossil in the lower right hand corner. I would love any help indentifying these items. Thank you
