You can see the gills ok it and there are other types of fungi atop it. It's truly a magnificent and well preserved specimen and where I found it was in a rock bed of an apartment complex. I also possess a crystilized dragons heart if yall are interested in seeing that.

Can anyone confirm the authenticity of this Oreodont skull?
fossil_fun posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
It is from a collector I admire but have no experience with purchasing so I need some help. Thank you! -
7 inches long, seller stated it has repairs but no restoration. He said the root is from the original tooth, the root looks suspect but I’m no expert

Hi all! Just purchased a large (17lb) ammonite on an online auction site; my first time getting one and even after reading a lot of the comments here about them I still have no confidence in my own ability to assess how real this thing is and how much of it is carved if it is real. Would love any guidance! Thanks so much!

Hi all, I could not resist to get these 3 beautiful hadrosaur eggs. Those have been the last ones in my price range, and from a renowned local seller. Was wondering if anyone could give more insights. Curious about trilobite part
Savvas posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I was browsing for some trilobites and came across this way expensive one that of course I can't afford in my craziest dreams right now. I was wondering though what is this brown part around the trilobite? It is not the same color as the rock, neither as the trilobite's exoskeleton. Could it be soft parts of the trilobite fossilized and preserved? Or something completely different? -

I found this in my yard decades ago in Brenham, Tx. However, the previous owner, who had died, was quite the rock collector and left the yard filled with petrified wood, large and small so I don't know where he got them. My family also collects rocks and fossils so I made sure to haul a many as I could when we moved to NY. My question- is this amber on the rock? It's not a fake, it's not glue, but when I google for info it claims amber on wood is very rare. Could anyone tell me what they think? Thank you I added another picture to show what looks like more light colored resin in another area

Hi I recently bought a small 4cm 'coprolite' from a commercial supplier. Do you think this is likely to be a genuine fossil from Bull Canyon or is it likely to be a fake. Is there any way I could tell?

Spino tooth natural or restored/ repaired
carch_23 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi TFF, Would like for your advice on this spino tooth I saw online. Ive been looking at some of your old threads on how spino teeth have famously been repaired or restored. Ive been, in a way, sort of been able to detect whether they have been fixed up. this one however is labelled 100% natural and messaged the seller, he also confirmed nothing has been done on the tooth and its condition is how it was found straight from the ground. Size is 4 inches so quite nice and wanted to double check as most of his listings of this size have been also labelled repaired or restored. price imo was also pretty good for its size and condition, though seller does seem reputable and many positive reviews, zero negatives. But I guess it doesnt hurt to ask for more opinions from you guys. Thanks in advance!- 5 replies

Is my megalodon tooth real or fake?
Ghully posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I started collecting megalodon teeth about a year ago and this was my first tooth. Now that I have a few others, I’ve noticed possible discrepancies with the tooth. My other teeth have a grainy, gritty textured root but this one has a smooth textured root with a shiny appearance. The root of this tooth is also very smooth/slippery to the touch, whereas with my other teeth, the root is fairly rough to the touch. Also, where the enamel meets the bourlette, that is also quite smooth but on my other teeth, it is fairly sharp and jagged in comparison. Any advice is appreciated as I’m still fairly new to collecting. Thanks in advance! -
Authenticity of megalodon tooth
Noah Loiselle posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I am a fairly new collector of fossils (when it comes to purchasing them that is) and was looking for some advice on whether or not this small megalodon tooth I recently purchased that comes from the Hawthorne Formation in Georgia is the real deal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! -
Good Evening, After one failed attempt of procuring an authentic Megaladon tooth and the money lost, I’m ready to resume attempts of purchasing a genuine specimen. Can you advise on a reputable location, store or website where I can now purchase an authentic megaladon tooth? I am very wary of scams, fake teeth, concrete molds, lead injection, etc. Support appreciated.

Hello everybody, I wanted to buy T-Rex bone for a long, long time, and today,I found one on online that has reasonable price for it's size. I just want to know,is there any possible way for me to be 100% sure that it belonged to a real specimen of Tyrannosaurus Rex (not Daspletosaurus or some other dinosaur)? I would like to get opinion from you,but I won't buy it if I won't be 100% sure it's from T-Rex. Guy that sells them has 100% positive feedback on 96 sold items that are fossils. Here are the photos: https://imgur.com/7OiyfXH https://imgur.com/V1Z4rux https://imgur.com/cNSSRUP https://imgur.com/Ai5WPFZ https://imgur.com/1gn6vGP https://imgur.com/bV6y8Qn https://imgur.com/v281d2W https://imgur.com/ZuB9LzY As I said,I know it's hard to be absolute sure that this piece belonged to T-Rex,but I want to be as sure as possible. Kind regards, Petar EDIT:just to be sure,I don't know much about fossilization, since I'm an amateur, except that when animal die it get buried by sediments and it degrades over time (soft tissue,collagen,organs...) and all is left is bones. But are those fossils from dinosaurs actual bones or just an imprint of what just to be a bone? If I'm holding piece that belonged to some dinosaur,am I holding bone or just rock?

Allosaurus fragilis rib? Is it authentic? Broken!
Dbelbey posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all this is my first post. I recently came into possession of what I believe to be a Allosaurus rib fossil. Unfortunately the specimen snapped in a few places during transit. This dose however give me the opportunity to post pictures of the broken sections. Not exactly what I was expecting to see, but then again this is my first large fossil so I don't really know what I was expecting to see. some information I was provided from the previous owner: '"last 6 inches of the distal end, is restorated. The rest of the rib was found largely intact. Found on private land in the Morrison Formation" Any information that can be provided to me would be a great help. Debbie- 10 replies

Drotops Megalomanicus and Hollardops Mesocristata
MarielleK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all. I am viewing a few trilobite fossils for sale (names in the thread title) and wanted you guys to have a look over. If all looks well, what would you pay for these? They are sourced from Morocco. For the double trilobite fossil, would these specimens be found together naturally? Or is it possibly a composite. -
Hi, can anyone tell me if this is real or fake? I can see there are repair work done on it (which I dont mind). I just want to know if its real. Thank you!
