Malachite Azurite Native Silver pseuodmorph botryoidal chrysocolla
Agateyes posted a topic in Rocks & Minerals
Hello all, I need help identifying a piece I was inherited recently. My best guess is a combination of Azurite, malachite, native silver, botryoidal chrysocolla, and some type gemstone imbedded in the azurite main specimen, with who knows what. I could be way off, but I’m going off similar pieces of my collection and knowledge. The top has an interesting metallic botryoidal effect around the main specimen. I am unsure of the location and it has some weight. Thanks in advance for your consideration and assistance, Mike -
I have some questions for those of you that have Azurite in your collection, have had experience with it, or know someone first hand that has or had it in their collection. Azurite is a very beautiful mineral & I want one. I've read the mineral hates - light, humidity, heat & will lose its bright blue color and turn dull towards green even. Though I've seen some rocks that have Azurite in it, that rock gets polished and keeps the bright blue color - well there's heat & moisture applied to the rock when polishing. I'd hate to buy a piece of Azurite & shortly it looses its bright blue color, kind of a waste of money I think. Questions, - When they say it'll lose its color, will this happen shortly or are they talking about long term like several years ? - When they talk about heat, humidity, light. Will it do just fine in normal household conditions ? - Temperature no more than 75 F / 24 C (will turn AC on) - Humidity what's too much ? Could buying a dehumidifier for home (for summer) to keep humidity in check suffice ? - Light, it will be away from a window and not be in direct sunlight, will LED lighting be ok ? - Or do I just need to keep it in a sealed container & store it inside the Fridge ? - What's the toxicity of this mineral ? I have no plans on cutting or polishing it, just leaving in a semi- sealed display case & wash hands after touching it.

Hello Fossil Friends... or Mineral mates? I received this much awaited azurite sun for christmas, and was wondering if they tend to fade? I heard pyrite suns will fade, which was upsetting but it makes sense given the chemical compound. Does azurite do the same or break down into the related malachite? Specimens are kept out of light/moisture.

Here are two interesting Pennsylvanian fossils that I bought at the Flagg Gem and Mineral Show in Mesa, Arizona (~4.5 inches wide) from the Apex Mine near St. George, Utah hosted in the Callville Limestone. A Chatetes sp. sponge is coated in azurite and malachite. Syringopora sp. coral molds are in goethite with significant germanium and gallium values. The goethite replaced the limestone. See this USGS article about the mine: https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1577/report.pdf
