Happy new year! I had a very relaxing and enjoyable 30 degree day in the creek yesterday. Tried out my my first pair chest waders yesterday and they where awesome. Anyway I feel like I had a decent haul. Last time I went out I almost threw out a hybodont fin spike. Thankfully I posted a picture before I did anything. It caused me though to think everything was something yesterday. There I’m going to make a separate post of some items I’m not sure of. Enjoy the pics. Any thoughts on I’d would be greatly appciated. Hi. Went to Big Brook again yesterday. It’s turning out to be a weekly addiction for me haha. It was in the 30s and sunny to start and then ended cloudy with snow. Fun times. Not sure what everyone else does to keep hands warm while sifting in freezing water. As a runner, I learned a trick to put latex gloves on as you first layer under whatever gloves you normally use. It works amazing. Keeps yours hands super warm. Hope this helps anyone in the forum. Goblin tooth without the root. (Thanks jersey devil) !

Hi. I thought it would be a good day yesterday to go to Big Brook yesterday. It rained for almost two straight days and the temperature jumped up to 55-60 degrees. I thoughts with all the rain and warmer temperature I would be able to get some good finds yesterday. Yesterday the temperature dropped into the 30's and it snowed. The water was the highest I have ever seen it because of the rain. I could not even get to my favorite spot because it was under water. I found a couple decent spots to look around. Here are my finding. A couple things I have no idea what they are and something I think I know what they are. If anyone can help with the ID's that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi. I went to go see a client yesterday and realized I was 20 minutes from Big Brook. So I decided to swing by for a hour or two. I went to the same spot that I found the plesiosaur tooth last week. I ended up getting nay staying a hour. 30 minutes into my quick trip I found this:

Any idea what species of shark tooth is this? Found on a gravel bar in NJ Cretaceous stream. It stuck out to me as its unusual shape and white coloring popped out, especially with the serrated edge.

Hi. I went to Big Brook again on Friday for my weekly quick trip. We had a really bad rain storm mid week so the the water was the highest I have ever seen it and the creek floor was like quicksand because of the 8-10 inches of fresh sand and other snarge. Every time I took a step my foot would sink down. The first 2 hours was nothing special. More of a struggle getting around. But the last hour I found a very productive spot. I posted one of the finds in fossil I’d. A big thanks you to @The Jersey Devil for all is patients and help with ID. Enjoy the pics. Hope I ID everything correctly. Plesiosaur tooth. Super excited about this one!

Hi. Found this at big brook yesterday. Thought it was just a piece of a shark tooth at first. Now that it dried out it’s not smooth or flat like a shark tooth. It’s more circular and rough. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks

Some stuff I've found through the years at some New Jersey Cretaceous Brooks. You just never know what you'll find. That's what keeps me going there. And the peace and quiet. I hope you all enjoy a little eye candy. And I'd love any opinions and ID's since I still don't know what some of these fossils are. Just shout out about anything you find interesting.

Hi. Thought I would share my two trip experience/finds to big brook. I live about an hour away so I get to go as much as I want during the week. I went last Thursday and this past Monday. Thursday was not good at all. I got a flat tire and ended up changing my tire in the BB parking lot. I had just enough time to find one shark tooth because it was getting dark. I went back this Monday to redeem myself. Here are my findings: i know top left is a vertebrae I thought I might of had something good but then the dried out and they all look like snarge row 1 is gobblin row 2-3 are crow I believe kaupi row 4 is mackerel but not sure which species row5 I have no clue haha row 6 sand tiger I believe this is a fish tooth or claw. Not sure Any corrections to my IDs would be much appreciated. Thank you! Also if anyone is interested in going to BB during the week it would be great to have company. I can be there from10-1 Monday through Friday. Just need about a week notice. PM if anyone is interested

Shark teeth, fish vertebra, and other fossil finds from Big Brook NJ

Had the chance to return to Big Brook, NJ with the family to search for cretaceous-era fossils. I am new to fossil hunting (this was my second time!) and had some interesting finds this trip - it is so much fun to learn about the prehistoric life in this area. It was a lovely day, although the brook was a little on the cold side. I would appreciate some help with identifying these 9 fossils: My best guesses are: 1) Mackerel/porbeagle shark (Cretolamna appendiculata) 2) Fish vertebra (is it possible to figure out the species?) 3) Unsure about this one, also Cretolamna? 4) Brachiopod (Choristothyris plicata) 5) Salmonoid (Enchodus petrosus) 6) Mackerel/porbeagle shark (Cretolamna appendiculata) 7) Goblin shark (Scapanorhynchus texanus?) 8) Sand tiger shark (Carcharias) 9) Crow shark (Squalicorax kaupi) Happy to provide more pictures if it would be helpful. Also, I found what looked like a bone (in the center of the below picture), but ended up throwing it back in the brook, believing it to be a concretion. Can anyone confirm that it's probably a concretion? Just want to make sure I didn't discard something like a Dryptosaurus phalanx in my search for shark teeth!

Here are some fossils I found while sifting and scavenging the Brooks of New Jersey. The fossils here are either found at Big Brook or Ramanessin Brook and from the Cretaceous period. This one found recently at Big Brook after hurricane Dorian.

While sifting the gravel banks at Big Brook, sometimes I will get a lump of matrix or clay in the screen. Anything strange gets saved for later. Here are some of those finds. Looks like some kind of plant.

I went to big brook a couple weeks back and figured I’d share my finds. Most of the teeth were unfortunately broken but it’s still always fun to find them. The last Belemnite has something around it which was kind of cool and different. I wish it wasn’t three hours from home but I love getting to go look for shark teeth when I am able to though! It’s not much to look at but enjoy everyone!!

I found this piece and a tooth at big brook a couple weekends ago and I was trying to get some help identifying. I think the first thing is possibly a piece of bone which I’m guessing could end up unidentifiable but any help is appreciated!!! The second is a tooth I found which I couldn’t find any matches to identify a species it belongs to. Thanks in advance everyone, you always help me tremendously!!

Hello, So I just moved back to New Jersey from the UK and when going through my old things, I came across a tooth that I found from Big Brook years ago. I used to work in Plio-Pleistocene zooarch at hominin sites and so I immediately thought reptile (it semi looks like some of the fossil croc teeth I would have to work with). I think it might be Plesiosaur but I am not quite sure! Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Today I had the pleasure of meeting up with @frankh8147 once again, to hunt the Cretaceous streams of New Jersey. I arrived much earlier than expected after leaving my house by 1am. So I stopped at Dunkin Donuts and grabbed a breakfast sandwich. It was still dark when I got to the site. Frank said that he would probably get there between 7:30- 8:30 so I took my time organizing my gear. As soon as it was light enough I started heading down to the stream. I startled about 8 deer as I made my way to the trail. I really appreciate see wildlife early in the morning. This was my 3rd trip to this site. I had an idea of where I would hunt until Frank got there. So I headed upstream to where I felt would be a good start. I was surprised by how many trees had fell since my last visit. Once I got to the spot I soon got to work. When Frank first told me about this particular spot, he said that the finds were more scarce but they also tended to be more of the rarer finds. Today that proved to be true. I seemed to go through my sifter many times without a single fossil. Then every once in a while there would be something, either a sharktooth, crab claw, belemnite piece, or enchodus tooth. But nothing spectacular and most not in the best condition. I knew going in, that it being the end of summer, no rain and low water levels, there was no new material so this was not a surprise. I was hoping that when Frank got there he could find a more productive spot. After a bit Frank showed up. He told me about a couple of possible spots, not too far downstream. After awhile we tried a couple different spots and not finding too much (atleast for me, Frank had a couple nice finds, that hopefully he will share later) finally it happened, I found my first Mosasaur tooth! When I saw it in my sifter I thought it was too good to be true. I have been looking for one for 12 years. It is not big as it is only 12 mm but it is in rather nice condition. I didnt get excited till Frank confirmed ID. That is one of the things that I like about hunting with Frank. He is a good guy and he is very knowledgable. I really enjoyed hearing about the different things that he has found there over the years. We hunted till about 1pm and then it was time to head home. All in all it was a good time and I cant wait to get back. Here are some pics. 1st is the mosasaur.

In order to obtain more information on NJ Fossil hunting laws, specifically sharks teeth, is there a contact either at the NJ State Museum or another organization that could be a definitive voice on the subject? I personally understand the laws in Colts Neck, Big Brook, etc, but need to get a grasp on all regulations in NJ. As well, if anyone has contacts for the Florida Museum or Floridian organization for similar inquiry, I would appreciate it. Thanks for any help.

On a whim I decided to stop by the Big Brook site in NJ to see what might have washed up after the rain yesterday...not a lot of shark teeth at all but plenty of weird mammal bits for some reason! I'm not good at all with figuring out mammal material so I figured I'd post some pictures to the forum and get people's thoughts. (Also I suppose it remains to be seen whether this is genuine Pleistocene material or stained, semi-recent bones...) These are smartphone pics (& Android at that) so excuse the quality. This first one is a tiny jaw of what I'm assuming is a rodent of some kind - the size is really throwing me off here. The same jaw is here on the bottom alongside a couple goblin sharks, plus an end of a random limb bone up top. Horse teeth? (The ends on both are broken, unfortunately - these are the most distinctive edges) (image size limit reached, more in next post)
