    Big Brook NJ fun!

Took my second trip to Big Brook, on Tuesday (it was so hot.. until i fell into the stream above the level of my waders and cooled off, heh). The results were not as epic as last time, but i was spending a lot less energy because it was so hot, and theres a lot more people in August than in March i did find some lovely teeth, ammonite and belemnites, a nice bivalve, and quite a few unknowns (including a?vert that i havent got figured out, its not as concave as most fish verts i see and Only has the one linear feature, though it exhibits the worn concentric rings on at least one side). Also, i found what appears to be a partially mineralized deer bone with clear toolmark/butchery evidence, so i have sent the info on that potential piece of archaeology to the nj state museum. There is one picture that contains most of my unknown bits, any input on those is appreciated! (I can ID the inverts but is that a coprolite? A ratfish jaw frag? A couple of whatsits?) i had a heck of a time getting the contrast right on some of the pics so please forgive me! Closeups or microscopic views of anything are possible if anyone asks

    What is this?

I have no idea what this little object is. It’s not wood, not man made, not a concretion as far as I can tell. Half inch long & found in big brook

    Croc scute?

Hey all, I found this awhile ago at ramenessin brook and was wondering what you guys thought, I posted it in a trip report thread awhile ago, but I thought more people would chime in if it got its own thread! TIA, if you need more pics or details let me know!

    Large shark tooth

Found this large tooth in Big Brook today. Is it just a very large goblin shark? If so she was a big one! Shame it’s not a full tooth. Also attached is a side by side comparison to the normal size I find. Thanks

    Fossil or rocks?

Hi all, Found these 3 in Big Brook yesterday. Any ideas what they are? Thanks

    More Big Brook ID’s

Hey all! As usual from big brook I’m looking for some identifications if anyone can help, thanks for your help in advance!! Travis 1) 2) 3)
  7. I’ve been afraid all week that I would get cancelled by the lightning. As late as Friday evening the forecast was for occasional thunderstorms and I already asked my wife if I could go Sunday morning instead. Set my alarm for 5am and the shark gods were with me and the forecast was just cloudy. My 16th trip to big brook and I’m already psyched for number 17. Today’s highlights were a pair of bones. Femurs I think and likely deer and modern but still way cool. Always a couple of “not sure what this is” pieces. All in all, another great day picking teeth. Still, I kick myself for all the years I could have been doing this. I envy our younger members who have a lifetime of this to look forward to.

    Femur ID help needed

Hello all. These two bones were found this morning. I think they are both femurs but I’m usually wrong. I squally find deer bone so that’s my starting point. The larger bone is 9.5 inches and the smaller 7.25 inches. The larger one is pretty heavy. I am also working on the assumption that they are modern. Can someone identify the animal? Thank you

    Strange tooth

Hi all, Any idea what this one is? Found in Big Brook today. Thanks

    Got wood?

Hello watching the trees dancing in the near hurricane winds and of course am daydreaming about sharking (as my wife calls it) i occasionally pick up a piece and hopeful but unsure if it’s a fossil, bring it home only to see when it dries out that it’s just a piece of wood. Ive kept a couple and the 3rd photo I still think may be a piece of modern poop. Anyone else keeping wood?

    Vertebrae ID needed

Hello all i am posting new photos (albeit not too good) of this 1/2 inch vertebrae which I assumed was fish but the hollow/open centrum is unlike what I’ve found before and online search didn’t help. Any help would be appreciated thank you

    Vert ID fish? Not shark

Gods afternoon all this little baby is 1/2 inch long apologies for a lousy iPhone 5 and a lousy photographer I’m usually wrong but I’ll say that it doesn’t look like the shark or fish vertebrae I’ve found. What strikes me is the open centrum. About the only thing I know for sure is that it’s not a concretion. In order the photos back, top, bottom, front and side

Pelvis? Or what? And of what?

15th visit to big brook today. Did pretty well finding shark teeth and have a small very which I will post. Found another rib and leg bone which I presume to be deer. But this was my best find of the day. Looks like a pelvis but couldn’t find a match. Assume modern from the nasty cuts. 3 inches by 2.5 inches. Thank you

    Ammonite?

Hello all i’m A bit apologetic about posting this after seeing some of the incredible finds folks are making but... I ask. Is this a fragment of ammonite? If so it would only be my second so I’d be pretty happy. 1/2 inch long. Thank uou

    Vertebrae question 2

Hello again are these 3 in fact vertebrae and if so can you tell if fish, ray or shark? as always my apologies for a lousy iPhone 5 and my thank you for your help

    Fish Vert ID please

Hello and thank you in advance. These are two verts which I believe are fish. I am asking for confirmation of that (and if not fish, what?). And if at all possible what kind of fish. The big one is under 1/2 inch long and the small one is 1/4 inch
  21. Where’s the tooth?

    Dino bones? ID please

Went to Big Brook in New Jersey and found these three items. (In VA I have found a lot of whale bone, however this bone is bigger and of different color.) Also, what are the other two curiosities below it? The smaller one looks like a toe. Thank you for looking and for any feed back.

    Another Big Brook Trip!

Dragged the family back to Big Brook in Monmouth County, NJ so I could do some more fossil hunting. We've had some pretty big storms over the past couple days, and I wanted to see if anything cool surfaced. Here are most of our finds. (The really dark thing on the bottom right is a vertebrae.)

Possible Pediomys Jaw at Big Brook?

My 8 year old daughter found this itty bitty jawbone while sifting at Big Brook in Monmouth County, NJ. It measures a little over a centimeter and includes the tiniest of teeth! Can anyone help me identify it? My first guess based on research is the marsupial pediomys, but I don't have much experience. Thank you for any insight!

    Big Brook finds- need ID

Hello! We were at Big Brook today and my son found this. Not sure what it is (if anything) and I cannot find any thing similar on the Big Brook websites. We also found some teeth and what might be a hadrosaur tooth fragment (second image). Can anyone confirm the hadrosaur tooth?
  25. I am planning my second trip to New Jersey in a couple of weeks. I want to return to Big Brook and/or hit up Ramanessin. Last time I went I had a spectacular time at Big Brook, and one of my fossils is still pending identification with the NJ museum Last time I parked at the Boundary Road lot and walked south to the riverbed, figuring less people probably went that way. Are there better sections to explore or better/different access points? Also pondering Ramanessin just for variety/the heck of it. Shown is the rough map of where I wandered last time.
