So much of what we find depends on dumb luck. Sure, fortune favors the prepared mind, but when it comes to collecting fortune is dispensed by very fickle gods. Case in point: I was collecting teeth & bones along my favorite Miocene Calvert formation locale along the Chesapeake Bay when I stumbled on half a very large Megalodon (#1 in the pic); looked like a fresh break, so I dug around & found the other half of the root (#2); continued to dig (feverishly) looking for the missing 3rd piece, but to avail. Rats, expletives deleted!! The fossil gods were toying with me! Four weeks later, along a different stretch of beach I found a meg fragment, stuck it in my pocket, & promptly forgot about it-until I got home. It was the missing piece (#3). What are the odds?? I could almost hear the laughter of the gods.In retrospect, while I would have loved to have found the perfect tooth, I've come to appreciate just how fortunate I really was. Wouldn't have had it any other way. Hope you find this little anecdote as amusing as the gods did.
