Hello, I wanted to get some opinions on this heteromorphic ammonite. It is said to be a Colchidites breistrofferi (61 mm) from the Uppermost Barremian of Paja Fm. in Santander, Colombia. Seller claims no reconstruction/restoration, but it looks quite rough to me. Does it seem legitimate? Is this typically how rough these are, or is this one just badly preserved/prepped? And does the ammonite look complete including living chamber? Thanks!

Buying heteromorph ammonites, any red flags?
Mochaccino posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, I'm considering purchasing between 3 heteromorph ammonites. I wanted to ask if they are authentic, and whether it seems like there is any restoration or carving going on. Also, if there's any one that looks to be in particularly bad condition. Here is #1. Presumably Nostoceras: #2, also Nostoceras, appears upside-down in matrix with turricone still embedded. Perhaps I can prep that myself? And #3, listed as Acrioceras tabarelli:- 15 replies

Brittle star fossil or carving?
DS20 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi all, I saw this cool looking piece in a rock store in a small US country town. There were many other fossils in the store but this one stood out to me with the contrast in the colors and reminded me of an alien creature. The store owner claimed it was real but I’m not entirely convinced. I loved the look of it so bought it anyway but thought I’d get your opinions on whether this was a real fossil in any way or just a pretty bit of art? It appears to be a part of the slab of rock and if it is carved they’ve done a very good job at getting all the details into this solid rock. Thanks!- 3 replies

I found these in sherburne county, MN in a farmers field shortly after they began turning the earth to build housing. I think one looks like a snake head or?? The other looks to have carvings of a thunderbird possibly and possibly a Phoenix? Driving me crazy. Help
