Hey all, I am working on cleaning the fossil pictured and would love advice on how to remove the plaster jacket. I was instructed to jacket it with plaster and burlap, using tin foil as a barrier. I tried using scissors which barely made a dent on the plaster, then a hand saw which shook the fossil too much for my comfort, and finally I tried wetting the plaster then cutting it with a utility knife which also shook the fossil more than I liked. I know museums use cast saws, anyone have an economical recommendation? Thank you in advance!

Quite awhile ago I was telling my youngest son I need to cleanup my fossil prep bench and he mentioned that I should make a video of it. Well, I did. Would be a very long video if I didnt break it up into 4 parts. In this video one will see not only just how messy my prep area has become but also see all kinds of fossils including some really neato surprizes. This first part is just over 20 minutes long. I messed up, how to clean off Potassium hydroxide
Alexander D.G posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Hey everyone, I recently got gifted some potassium hydroxide in order to help clean up fossils. I tried it on a few smaller fossils which i was not too fond of to see how it worked and it had good results. After i got a bit more confident with it a tried it on one of fossils i've had for a long time and liked a lot but never was able to clean with the tools i had. So long story short i applied it, it chew through a bunch of the fossil itself leaving it worse off. After cleaning it off i noticed it was covered in a white substance i was unable to get off even with an hour of furious scrubbing. Is there anyway to minimale the damage to this piece, and how to i get rid of this white substance? Thank you for your help!- 10 replies

I have been wanting to make this post for a while, but haven't gotten around to actually getting good pics until today. I have got myself one of the better Platystrophia brachiopods from my Nashville trip in August. It has a good bit of gunk stuck in the radial ribs, and I would at least like to clear a good bit of it out. Any cost effective tips? pics: Pedicle valve Brachial valve
