Can I highlight the quartz in the limestone by coloring it?
todor.dbk posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Hello everyone! I recently found a small stone next to a newly dug road, and it is full of cross-sections of shells. I would clean it well first. But to emphasize the cross-sections, do you perhaps know of any way to paint only mineralized shells? So, for some kind of coloring - such that the quartz (I assume that the shells are mineralized into quartz?) absorbs and retains the color, and the basic medium - limestone, does not retain the color. That would be fantastic to see.. Thanks for every reply !- 3 replies

Does anyone know of deposits other than the LeGrand crinoids where each species is preserved in a different characteristic color, all on the same slab? We have this kind of thing in the brachiopods and trilobites of the Decorah Formation (Late Ordovician) here in Missouri, which is what got me thinking about it. But I've never seen a report summarizing other cases of this phenomenon, and as I think about it I'm not sure I can name any others. Can you? Brachiopod photo info: A= Zygospira B= Rafinesquina C= Doleroides 1 = Isotelus, rusty brown 2 = ?Achatella, light gray. Highway M near Antonia, Jefferson County Decorah Formation, Late Ordovician, ~450 million years old

Matching the coloration of a woolly rhino skull?
SimpleCollector100 posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
I am interested in getting a woolly rhino skull. I found one but the colorations are slightly off since they are from two different animals. Is it difficult to have the colors match? Maybe with some type of staining that wouldn't be too hard and degrade/damage the actual bone? Or is whitening a better approach? Thank you- 9 replies
