Are there any rules to follow when cutting a fossil matrix ?
Denis Arcand posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
I'm trying to reduce my fossil storage space (I have a lot of matrix taking up space in many boxes). The only option I have found is to cut the matrix using a portable water saw with a diamond blade. As I'm new in this field, I'm afraid of doing something wrong. What are the rules when cutting a matrix? How near to the fossil can I cut without damaging the fossil? How much of the matrix should I keep for presentation purposes? Rectangular shape matrix are good for storage, but that doesn't feel natural to me, any suggestions ? Here's an example of what I'm talking about Before After -
I posted pictures of this uncut stone/fossil several weeks ago hoping for an ID, but since I didn't know the location it was found, the consensus was it most likely is stromatolite. I've had it cut and polished and it's gorgeous! It's very dark inside. The circular parts look like they are gray and black, but in real life it seems to be just 2 different textures of black. The parts that look more gray are rougher/grainier and the blacker areas are more smooth and reflective/shiny. The circular parts almost look like fluffy clouds. The in between area is dark gray until you get near the edges where it is more brown/mud color, with a few small spaces of white quartzy looking stone dotted throughout. Pics are from outdoors and indoors. Do you still think it's stromatolite? and does the inside give any more clues to possible location or age? Thank you for your time and your comments

Hey everyone, I have a ton of petrified wood that I would like to cut and polish, but I don’t know the proper tools to use. The largest piece is about 4” in width. Any ideas? Thanks!

I found a nice well-preserved ammonite specimen while on a trip, the only problem is it’s in the middle of massive slab of stone! How do I remove it without utterly destroying it? Is it even worth it to try? Jackhammers are not an option. Is it possible to dissolve the rock using an extremely strong acid?

Show Us Your Cut And Polished Nautiloids And Ammonites
barefootgirl posted a topic in Member Collections
Okay, I would love to see other peoples Nautiloids and Ammonites that have been cut and polished. This little nautiloid below is the only thing Ive had cut and polished so far but I'm hoping to get some of the bigger nautiloids and some of the ammonites I found in the woodbine formation cut and polished soon.
