Suspicious auction tooth
Johnfossilhunter posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Dear all, I have recently encountered a very good deal on the tooth attached below. However, the deal is too good so I wonder, is it a fake or is there a chance for it to be real. Deal is around (price removed) for a 10.5 cm tooth Thank you for your help Best- 6 replies

Hi, I would really appreciate any advice on the following. I recently bought a set of amber on a well-known auction site (sent from Lithuania). I have read up on how to test for authenticity and did a salt water test, the amber floated- so I guess all good there. I then burnt one, it released a nasty chemical/kerosene smell. Is there anything else I can do to check for authenticity? I bought the amber as a graduation gift for my students, so would hate the idea of giving them a piece of plastic! All advice appreciated.

An afternoon reporting... fake Mosasaur jaws.
charlie3425 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Here is a way to spend a gloomy winterish afternoon. Searching, (easily) finding and reporting fake fossil fabrications. This time the 'Shop for handmade, vintage, custom, and unique ... ' got some signals. These sellers are a real disgrace. Hope I saved some beginning fossil collectors from a bad start...- 1 reply

Hello! I saw a very nice fossil fish with both halves up on auction. It's not raising too many red flags for me, but unfortunately, the seller doesn't have much information; but I did manage to glean all that I could, as well as some close-ups. They say their Aunt gave it to them, and she claimed to have collected it from Brazil. Unfortunately she also worked on cruise ships so it could be from anywhere, they pointed out. The matrix reminds me of the kemkem beds, but, I could be wrong. Here are some photos: and, for 10 points, I'd like you to give me the ID, and whether it's real or not It does look a bit "pristine" to me, though, with the shape being exactly what we'd expect a fish to look like, without any sort of imperfections...

Real Carcharodontosaurus tooth with no repair or restoration?
Kurvinosaurus posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi All! I am new to fossil collecting and I recently bought a Carcharodontosaurus tooth from an online fossil store. I just want to double check with more experienced people to see if the tooth looks real and is as described by the seller. The description said it is from the Kem Kem deposits of Morocco, and has no repair or restoration. The tooth is one and 1/16 inches long. Thank you for your help!- 6 replies

Is this theropod claw/toe real?
Rahul posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi all -- Found this claw for sale and am really interested in buying it. Seller acknowledges that exact species of theropod cannot be determined but that the fossil is from a good source in Kazakhstan. There do appear to be theropods from the region. Any obvious signs in these pictures that this is a fabrication? Just at a glance, it looks like the grain does follow the curve, which is the first thing I'd look for. Anything else that stands out? Relatedly, any signs that this is a composite toe (with bones from several individual dinosaurs put into one display)? The latter does not bother me too much but would be good to know up front. Thanks much in advance!- 8 replies

Is this Metacanthina Trilobite real?
Lydon posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone, I got this rather nice looking Metacanthina recently as a present as well as some other trilobites (which have sadly turned out to be clear fabrications after some research, clear bubbles etc.) This one looked more convincing and I have gone over it with a magnifying glass but couldn't see any details various websites told me to look out for. Was wondering if someone with more experience could spot anything suspect! There is a crack along the matrix and on the rear of it's right eye some lens detail can be seen. Is this trilobite real?... NOT!
Sjfriend posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Is this trilobite real? How often have we seen this question? Since folks are often asking I thought I'd toss in this obvious fake that I got in a bulk rock buy years ago. I'm no pro but I couldn't even find any real parts of this thing. I'll point out what I see and others can add their ideas Here is overall from top Here is closer shot of the front showing a few big problems. 1: the crack running around the side of the trilobite shows where the fake bug is separating from the base. They take a chunk of matrix, carve out a hole then glue on a molded fake. Then glue on powdered rock to cover the glue lines. 2: there are no details on this trilobite. They didn't even try to fake the eyes. The body is painted on. And here you can see the bubble holes from the resin / plaster used to mold the whole thing. And again, no detail what so ever. The fossil is very, very rough. No smooth lines, everything looks chisled in. Another thing to look at, when looking at the matrix overall, there is no repaired crack thru the matrix. These trilobites (like most Moroccan trilobites) are found by breaking chunks of rock looking for the black/brown lines of the trilobite shell. Then the rock is marked where the fossil is and glued back together. They then prep down to the trilobite. So, a repaired crack running thru the fossil is very common. Even though this is a bad fake I'm keeping it to use for showing what to look out for.- 18 replies

Croc jaw from Kemkem fabricated?
Abstraktum posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everybody So this fossil here bothers me for some time now because I'm still not sure what to make of it. I'm especially asking for the roots in the jaw and if they are a composite. Also this one tooth growing out of the root of the root looks odd to me. Is this a genuine fossil or are these roots / tooth put in the jaw? I'm used to these fake teeth put on jaws as a composite form Morocco but with this one I'm still not sure what am I looking at. On one side you can actually see the root in the jaw. Would something like this be fabricated as well? And is the ID correct? It's described as a partial maxillary of an Elosuchus sp. from the Ifezouane Formation, KemKem from Taouz/Morocco. No word about any restoration/fabrication or what so ever. Size is 3.48 in (8,84 cm).- 10 replies

Reputable dealer of Moroccan trilobites?
hemipristis posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
hafa adai, I'd really like to buy one or two of those detailed trilobites with spines, appendages and all, either Russian or Moroccan. I see prices all over the map, and have observed a few really bad fakes. I'm sure that there are also a lot of really good fakes (hence the wild price differences). Can anyone recommend a checklist/things to look for and/or a reputable dealer (preferably one that doesn't charge mortgage-level prices)? I don't want to keep bothering folks with repeated queries of Is this one good?" "How about this one?" I've read a number of posts in this form, and they tend to refer to individual specimens. I"m looking more for something that I can save to my HD and refer to while I"m shopping online. thank you in advance, hemi- 8 replies
